Would A Brief History of Time count for the Life, birth or renewal task? A large amount of the book looks at the origin (which is kind of like a birth) of the universe and it talks lots about the origin and growth of ideas and theories...

No problem, I only saw this yesterday and had a look at the books Id already read in September so added them.Am currently reading The Dome By Stephen King and then Ill finish Cleopatra by Margaret George so S and G should be covered.Also I will check if Under the dome has been on my tbr list for a year, im sure it has.

Finally done! Gosh, Anna Karenina was nearly the death of this challenge.

Actually, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. To me, Tolstoy = daunting. I just found the Russian names tough, especially since each character had more than one, depending on the situation. And there were many times in those farming chapters when I put the book down and thought I'd never pick it up again.I think modern literature has spoiled me with it's graphic descriptions 'cause I always have to read these classics so slowly so that I don't miss anything (like Vronsky and Anna consummating their relationship in all of one sentence!)
Oh well, it's another book off my TBR list.

If you're interested, Sharle, then there is a discussion about this book in the book discussion corner of our group. We did a buddy read on it a couple of months ago.
@Emma: it is just a matter of making a scedule and keeping to it. And didn't you finish Contact, a book you disliked and therefor would have been difficult to finish?
Contact was an exception and It was for a challenge. There are some books i.e. Cry to heaven that I just wont finish even though Ive read quite alot of it.

Me I always finish a book I started. It just bugs me if I don't.
Thanks, Barbara, I'll check it out.@Emma: I made myself read according to a schedule and then used more interesting reads as a reward for keeping to it. I also share most people's problem of not being able to leave a book unfinished.
It never ceases to amaze me how some people can continue to read a book that is excruciatingly difficult to finish.Unlike Sharle and Barbara, I don't keep to a schedule, but I often have grim determination to finish, either because I promised to review the book, I need it for a challenge, or I want to know about it because of the hype/reputation of the novel. Also, my philosophy is that you can't truly judge a book until you've reached the end. Sometimes they surprise you. Life of Pi served to remind me of that last month; I didn't enjoy it, but I'm really glad I finished it.
A lot of people abandon books they don't find exciting enough, saying that life is short and shouldn't be wasted on boring books, but I don't only read books for entertainment, so that's ok with me.

How it works:

Complete the following 3 tasks:
- Read a book where birth, new life or renewal is central to the plot.
- Read a book with an iconic Spring image on the cover - flowers, baby animals, bees, butterflies, etc.
- Clean out those tbr shelves! Start by reading something that's been on your tbr pile for at least a year.
This challenge lasts for the whole season of spring, from 1 September to 30 November.
Unlike most challenges, you are allowed to use 1 book for two functions, ie. you can use a book to finish both a task AND a letter. However, you can't use a book to finish two tasks or two letters.
Eg. I can read PopCo by Scarlet Thomas for the letter P and for the tbr task, but I can't use it for the letter S and the letter P.
