A quick guide to surviving my ratings:
⭐ — "This book is ridiculous." Unrealistic plot, characters I'd cross the street to avoid, dialogue that reads like it was generated by a very earnest robot, and absolutely zero emotional payoff. I finished it so you don't have to.
⭐⭐ — "This book sucks, but I've read worse." Dull plot, flat characters, writing that feels like particularly ambitious fanfiction — but there's a flicker of something in there. One (1) feeling was had.
⭐⭐⭐ — "I almost REALLY liked it, and that's somehow more annoying." The plot is fine. The characters are fine. The writing is actually pretty good. I just know I'll forget it existed in three weeks, and that's its own kind of tragedy.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ — "Nearly perfect, which means I'll be thinking about what went wrong at 2am." Great characters, a good balance of angst and joy, writing that earns its emotions — but the plot telegraphed its punches a little too early. So close.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — "Perfect." A plot that surprised me. Characters I'd lay down my life for. Writing that cracked me open and didn't apologise. A love story that felt true. A world I didn't want to leave. A book that left me genuinely speechless — and I always have something to say.
