This Liveship traders trilogy is fantastic! (The second book is The Mad Ship and the third Ship of Destiny) It's fantasy, the characters are really good (with their imperfections) and the character development is excellent! (Some of the characters, which I hated at the beginning became some of my favorite characters by the end of the trilogy.)
