A plot shouldn't need half a book of exposition to get started but instead surprise me with a few unexpected (!) turns. And finally I want to read worlds with ideas/magic/technology that makes me think. Add a few good quotes, some dialogue with snarky comebacks and don't forget a bit of humor - even the darkest places need some - then season to taste with a bitter sweet ending. Nothing comes without cost or consequences.
In the past few years I've been a Hugo voter, and so I find myself looking for new and fresh novels and also short-fiction. If you've read something that was published recently ... please don't hesitate to recommend it to me. ...more
