Murderbot diaries by Martha Wells. she is not a new author, and the lead is non-human, but my sci-fi friends all loved it.

Glad to help. I don't sci-fi that much but on the romance-y margin of the genre, I liked the Starbound trilogy (which was really a pilot version of the Illuminae Files).
