This might be a good entry point into the genre from a fantasy-reading background as it has a plot that could easily be from a high fantasy novel (young man finds out he has special powers, goes on the run when his home is attacked by family enemies, joins up with secretive warrior society, becomes a leader, starts a rebellion) but in a sci-fi setting. It also has interesting worldbuilding but doesn't get too bogged down in detailed exposition.
