Despite being lower level reading, it's thought-provoking and not just a "cheap entertainment" book. Great book but not difficult to read, and very engaging. Main characters are 14 - 21 years old. Anything by Libba Bray is really well done. I read her first series when I was still in high school. It's really well done with a bit of history. Shiver Maggie Stiefvater's series were great. My sister read them when she was in high school. She was even allowed to do a book report on one. Her one book The S I'm not entirely sure what high school's normally allow into their libraries but I can at least name a few without swearing and other things that I think are inappropriate for that age group.

Wake Lisa McMann is usually a pretty good author.
Glass Houses Rachel Caine is a fantastic read. Her first series was and still is a huge hit with teens. I even remember reading the series throughout high school.
The Iron King Julie Kagawa's series are also a good read.
I can only think of two series that would work for both genders of teen and those would be:
Asylum
and
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
They are very unique using illustrations and black and white photos to enhance the effects of the story. They are creepy stories but not like Stephan King or Edgar Allan Poe scary.
Daughter of Smoke & Bone Great series for girls.
The Girl in the Steel Corset Good series for adventures. Steampunk version of Doctor Jerkyl and Mr. Hyde. Very good series.
Magyk Good series for guys or girls.
Graceling A lot like Hunger Games but instead of future more like medieval.
Leviathan Good for boys.
Ready Player One Both genders would probably enjoy it.
Legend Good series for either gender.
The Ruins of Gorlan Series for guys.
The Magicians I love this series. It's a great read for guys or girls. It's even being made into a TV series for 2016.

Hopefully you can use some of these or find some similar!
