gem! asked Gail Carriger:

So, before I go on, I just wanted to say I got my signed copy of Soulless in the mail, and I fangirled like nothing else XD The dialogue within your books is what really makes them special. The conversations characters have with each other seem so ingenuous and spontaneous, I often wonder how you can craft a scene in such an extraordinary fashion. How do you do it?

Gail Carriger I love dialogue, it's my favorite thing to write. I really do see the characters, as if in a movie, talking to each other in my head. I know some authors struggle with dialogue (I struggle with description and nookie). I really don't have another answer for you. It just plays out in my head that way, and I just have to type as fast as I can to keep up.

I will say that often I'm struggling with a scene and I realize that's because what I am writing in narration needs to be in dialogue, and then everything goes more smoothly. You might be picking up on that trick I'm using.
