asked:
I'm apprehensive about reading this book. This is typically a genre I wouldn't read (not to mention I haven't seen the trilogy) but I know it's a classic best-seller. Why should I read the book? What should I take away from the book? Why do you recommend it to me?

Read it for the quotes.. Read it to know how composed a man needs to be when faced with unfavorable circumstances.. Read it to understand how defeat can be faced among peers and personally.. Read it so that the movies make more sense when you watch them later.. Read it with a pen and paper handy to keep jotting down the wisdom that is imparted by the author through Vito Corleone's quotes..

First, it's well written. Puzo has an authentic, almost poetic writing style that is absorbing. Second, the story is an age old classic of a son trying not to become the father. There's moving moments, great dialogue, it holds emotional punch, and is definitely worth its reputation.

I read all kinds of books but I have never read a better book than The Godfather. This isn't a genre I normally like but once I picked it up, I didn't want to put it down. The Godfather is absolutely everything that a good book should be.

Read this book if you are willing to read about organized crimes. Read this book if you're willing to read about characters with very questionable morality. Read this book if you are willing to tolerate 1960s views on race, gender equality, and whatever things that may be offensive to modern 21st century readers. Read this book if you want to try being on the other side of the fence. Read this book if you can handle more of the above.

Definitely, read the book, it starts out fast and holds your attention until the end.
Scott Williamson
I'd never seen the movies but picked up a vintage copy of the book and thought I'd try to tackle it. It was a pleasant surprise and a nice change of genre. I actually read a few chapters then started watching the movie, always staying ahead in the book of course. I don't think I could've watched the movie without reading the book. The book is nothing earth-shattering but it's definitely worth your time.
Bea Wright
I personally thought the book was mediocre, whereas the movies (1 and 2 anyways) were excellent.

It is well written and immersive. Read to see what the movies were based off and the book does add a few differences, so that is fun to spot shat was changed in the transition from novel to motion picture.
Read it to discover how one man can rise to the top and when he gets there realize that he has lost more than he could have imagined.
Read it to see how the end justifies the means and remember "revenge is a dish best served cold."

Never read any crime/mob boss stuff, but this was still awesome. Great tale.
John O. Teague
Read it for enjoyment only. It's "sort of" a fun book.
Brian
It's just a novel, man; it's not a 12th grade English assignment. Either read it or don't. This is a rare case in which the movie is better than the book, but it's a good book.

No one's forcing you to read it or any other book. Check it out of the library if you want to taste and see. Otherwise, find a book you know you want to read, and read that.
