Bekki There is a part in the story where Annie is being punished and needs to do yard work. Rose helps her sneak away by wearing some of Annie's clothes to fool her mom, and apparently kept them.

H I finished the book and reread the scene. It's just an illogical leap the author takes to tie the murder to Rose. The clothes don't actually matter since it's her dating Bill Leroy and having access to the car that matters. (So it really is just bad writing.)
Daralyn I agree, that bit is confusing. How did Emily end up wearing the coat when she was killed and put in the trunk if Rose borrowed it last? Or was the coat just in the trunk with Emily, and if so, why?
