OK, I finally tuned in to watch Russian Doll on Netflix and does anyone else think this book is a ripoff of the Amy Poehler / Natasha Lyonne show (released 2/1/19 on netflix)? Ok, it is Alice's relationship with her Dad in this book and Natasha Lyonne's with her mom in the show, and Alice is turning 40 while Natasha turns 36, but.... BTW if you haven't watched Russian Doll, you should!

Mirkat No, I've seen Russian Doll and don't think this book is at all a "ripoff." Other than having time travel (in season 2) and being set in NYC, I find the plot and tone very different.
Mackenzie While I agree that this book shared a lot of similarities with the most recent season of Russian Doll (and I felt myself thinking this as I was reading it), the timeline makes the idea that this author ripped off that show highly unlikely. Production schedules mean this book has been in work for quite some time. I actually felt that this book handled the idea of "fixing" one's future through manipulating the past much better than Russian Doll did.
Melissa Russian Doll is great but sometimes things are just similar. it doesn't mean anybody ripped someone else off. did you think Russian Doll ripped off Groundhog Day, which came out in the 90s?

is it so bizarre for characters to have a birthday on-page/screen, or a relationship with their parent (or even a parental figure), or for a story to take place in a major metropolitan center? of course not.

if you view everything in terms of tropes and generalities, of course you will find similarities, but it doesn't mean people are stealing ideas. it's ludicrous to presume they are doing so here, especially given the time frames of publishing
MsMaddyMax Haven't seen Russian Doll but when I read the description of this book I thought it was oddly similar to Liane Moriarty's What Alice Forgot. Turned out it was actually very different, but still find the cusp-of-40 protganist named Alice quite the coincidence!
Christine Replay by Ken Grimwood was published in 1997 has a similar theme; I always though Groundhog Day was a takeoff on Replay
Sarah Carter No. These concepts are quite different -- Russian Doll Season 1 she is in a time loop. Season 2 she goes back in time - way different way and manner than in this book.
