Thanks for your comment and perhaps you’re right. I have read quite a few new release books over the last 6-12 months that were written and published during covid - that have a theme that somehow connects to covid - and Russian Doll season 1 (the best one IMO; season 2 goes a little off the rails for me) was released back early 2019. So I feel there was plenty of time for this book to have been written after seeing it. Maybe the author never watched RD but I believe she is from NYC and it just seems a bit much in the overlap Dept for me.
Yes, but season one of Russian Doll, was more of a Groundhog Day situation, and it took place only in the present. I felt the way this book handled it was very different. I liked the loop aspect. The other big difference is that Nadia lost time in the present every time she went back in time--she seemed to not exist in the present and people were unable to reach her. The biggest similarity to me is that both characters were in denial about the impending deaths of their most beloved family member. Emma Straub has said in interviews that she wrote this book to help process the death of her father, and I can really see that in the book. I would also say that Russian Doll is very focused on generational trauma, while This Time Tomorrow doesn't address that in any way but rather how middle age can be the start of a time of creativity and adventure, rather than the beginning of the end. I guess I obviously really loved the book!
Appreciate your perspective, and glad you liked the book. I actually did as well, but have a different POV on the overlaps. I think both characters looped as they attempted to change something in the future, and I felt This Time Tomorrow also dealt extensively with trauma - that of her mother being gone and being raised by an atypical parent who was dying, possibly due to life choices. I don't feel the author directly replicated the show, but I do think the author borrowed so extensively that it felt conceptually and in many details plagiarized to me.
