I read those pages more than once because it confused me. I don't think he was supposed to be her grandfather----but the time line is odd if he wasn't her grandfather. Gran gets pregnant at 16 and Mr. Preston wants to marry her---so either he's the father or he was going to marry a teenager with a baby. Another thing that bothered me was gran was really young when she died. Working under the assumption Molly was in her 20's and her mother was in her 20's when she had Molly...she was maybe in her late 50's???

All we know for sure is Mr. P & Gran were once engaged at age 16. He says Gran's rich family banished her boyfriend (Mr. P's friend), & then kicked her out when they found out she was pregnant. I think Mr.P stepped up, & offered to marry her anyway, & considered that their "engagement" and maybe she even considered it, but in the end they just remained lifelong friends. He would have embraced Molly & her mother as family, if they were, and the way he speaks of them isn't like a father/grandfather.

There are one of two possibilities
1. Gran was 16 meets Preston who's the love of her life and she is his - but she just can't be with him because of her family. Then a year later she decides she prefers his mate instead who gets her knocked up but who then promptly sacks her off and leaves her to raise a child on her own. Preston still thinks he is a nice guy.
Ridiculous.

I thought that was where this was going to end up, but no. I don't believe he was her grandfather. I think he would have come out and said it. I'm glad, too, because it would have been just a bit too coincidental.

Why was Molly wearing her Gran's teacup pj's when she hadn't gone in her room since she died?

I think he is definitely Molly's grandfather. I suspect (though not stated in the book) that Molly's Gran made Mr. Preston agree to never tell her secret (that he was the father of Molly's mom) and that is why he doesn't come right out and say it.

I think so but it’s a mystery.
