Holly Yes, I thought that too, 'gran' would have been awfully young, and that was never discussed.

message 2: by Shila (new)

Shila Marie I want to say she was late 50's, maybe early 60's. She has Molly's mom at 17, and not sure when Molly's mom had Molly, but definitely I would assume in her 20s and Molly is 25. But she talks like she is a British woman in her 80's. That really threw me off.

message 3: by Kate (new)

Kate Gran’s 75th birthday dinner was mentioned at one point, so she was at least that old.

message 4: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Rauch Kate I missed that!!!! I'm just not sure those numbers work correctly. Molly's mom would have to be 35 when she had her----and it was insinuated Molly's mom died young because of the drugs.
This book had several problems.... this is just one of them. It could have benefited from better editing.

message 5: by Lea (new)

Lea It would definitely make sense that Gran was in her 60s, but the novel makes her sound like she's in her mid to late 70s. Weird

message 6: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer It's a complete plot hole really. If Gran was 75 when she died and Molly was 24 (since she is remembering it during the book and she's 25 in the book) that would mean "Gran" was 60 when Molly was born. If Gran had Molly's mom when she was 17 then Molly's mom would have been 43 when she had Molly. Not sure how this was missed in revisions and editing of this book!

message 7: by Jaymi1028 (new)

Jaymi1028 Her mom could’ve been 43 when she had Molly, that’s not necessarily a plot hole.

message 8: by Jaymi1028 (new)

Jaymi1028 Also your math is wrong. If gran was 75 when Molly was 24 or 25 then she would’ve been 50 or 51 when molly was born, not 60. Putting the mom closer to 33/34 when she had molly.

message 9: by Tina (new)

Tina her mom seems to be a teenager runaway struggling with drugs and toxic relationships, it's definitely not the best setup to make her gran 75. one more reason I don't like this book lol

Renee pancreatic cancer

message 11: by Leah (new)

Leah Bel There is a quote in the book about going to Olive Garden for Grans 75th birthday, they had Chardonnay, that’s where Rodney takes Molly on their ‘date’

message 12: by Kari (new)

Kari (Lit Society Podcast) Yikes. You're right. The timing is off.

message 13: by Judith (new)

Judith So after all this discussion about the "timing," is he her grandpa or not?

message 14: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Rauch James, I think the author intended for him to be the "clever twist" grandfather ----but the numbers don't work out. IMO

message 15: by Judith (new)

Judith I still say the story he told was true, & the numbers do work out, so just accept it! They lived in the same town all their lives & he just remained Gran's friend & watched over Molly.

message 16: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Rauch James... I can agree to disagree. (:

message 17: by Judith (new)

Judith Sure, me too. It was a mean-spirited book, so either version of Mr. Preston fits right in.

message 18: by Helen (new)

Helen Morgan Erm 75 less 25 is 50. 50 less 17 is 33. Molly’s mum would have been 33.

message 19: by Judith (new)

Judith Honestly, who cares at this point? We all agree this book has numerous credibility issues.
