He says Gran's rich family banished her boyfriend (Mr. P's friend), & then kicked her out when they found out she was pregnant. I think Mr.P stepped up, & offered to marry her anyway, & considered that their "engagement" and maybe she even considered it, but in the end they just remained lifelong friends. He would have embraced Molly & her mother as family, if they were, and the way he speaks of them isn't like a father/grandfather.(less)
