I can't believe this book has been shortlisted for best mystery book of 2021 by Goodreads. It's totally undeserving. In my review of the book I also mentioned that the ending was contrived and hardly plausible. Alex Michaelides is fortunate to have a big publisher behind him and also name recognition. Had the book been penned by some unknown newcomer, no one would be talking about it.

Yes. Because of his previous book, I think he felt the need to include a shocking twist at the end, which wasn't shocking after all. I definitely liked his first book more. This story was ok. But nothing more than a "the serial killer you didn't see coming" type.

I completely agree. There were all these subplots that ended up having NOTHING to do with whodunnit, like Henry- he was abused and had a knife but wasn't the killer? I still have no idea what the heck the point of killing the Maidens was... to frame the professor? But why? How did that get Mariana out of the picture again? And even if the random crimes did get her out of the picture, what was the point with Sebastian being dead? I agree that it was forced just to be a surprise and didn't link to anything else in the story well. Seemed random and pointless.

Absolutely.. Utterly disappointed by the end. Things popped out of no where and was shocked [not pleasantly :=( ] to read the climax.

...he was doing so well 'til he got to the end, too!

I was very disappointed throughout the book, but mostly with the ending. In the attempt to out all the pieces together, the author sacrificed credibility. The array of players were very shallow except for perhaps Fosca. I think this book is riding in the coattails of The Silent Patient. 2 stars.

Yes. To me, most of the book felt forced and rushed together.

I agree, forced and flat

So I didn't think about it much that way with this book but I do see your point! I did feel it with others recently and didn't know how to articulate what I meant but you summed the feeling up perfectly!

Yesss! I think the author was trying to live up to the plot twist of his previous novel. This one just felt completely forced to me and not well thought out at all

I totally agree with you on this, something common in The Silent Patient and The maidens is that there are a few loose ending which I absolutely despised and felt that the intensity of the story would have been better if those were brought to light. At the same time this book did not have a fluent ending. The lack of stress given to the subplots genuinely disappointed me. After all the ending did seem kind of forced upon. I will definitely give credits to this book for keeping me enthralled.

Yes! Totally forced. I felt as if the author had done a fantastic job of keeping the reader engaged and then couldn't come up with a plot twist at the end that was the culmination of everything until that point. So he just copped out and made up something. So disappointing.
Forced. Annoying. Cop out.
Forced. Annoying. Cop out.

Yes. Not convincing.

The end was too shocking, I would have like it if it had not included the folly scene, till then it was just great
