Ami
Ami asked Isabel Allende:

I am ready to read your work for my own enjoyment-- not for school-- and I don't know where to begin! But I think I will start with your first book. My question to you is, did you ever think that your work would end up on reading list at school, or that you would pop up in Spanish classes in the curriculum? That's how I know your work, you see. That's got to feel kinda nice I imagine. :)

Isabel Allende I never thought I would become a writer in the first place, let alone that my books would be successful or required reading for kids. I don’t know how old you are, Ami, or if you are a good reader. If you like to read, maybe you can start with Daughter of Fortune and if you get hooked (I hope so), you can follow with Portrait in Sepia and finally The House of the Spirits. They can be read independently, but together they are a trilogy.
