Elena asked Isabel Allende:

This question contains spoilers… (view spoiler)

Isabel Allende This is really an unusual question, Elena! I don’t see any advantage in refusing to read books, unless you replace them by audio-books. The damage from reading is related to the kind of books you choose to read. For example, a mentally disturbed person who only reads about crime, torture and war, may turn into a psychopath. Books can have great influence on people; that is why religious organizations, repressive governments, etc. try to control what people read and what authors publish. Did you know that some parents have tried to ban The House of the Spirits, my first novel, from high schools’ optional reading lists in some states?
