John asked:

So I read this whole damn thing and still don't know wtf actually happened, if anyone would like to post a detailed, spoilery synopsis. What was the link between the past and present storylines? What was with the yellow jackets and the seaweed and the sludge?

Rachel I concur, nothing makes sense and this wasn't even a damn horror novel. Like MAYBE 20% was horror....maybe. There seems to be NO link at all except the house from the past and present. I think the yellow jackets were what was supposed to link it all? None of it made sense and it was a painful read that got to the end and told us...nothing.
Anna This is in response to Rachel's comment. You're absolutely right in that it's not a horror novel. But it feels like it's definitely a Gothic Horror and fits rather neatly into the genre. Gothic Horror is a pretty different beast when compared to plain old horror. It's neither gory nor terrifiying. It's characterized by hauntings, fixations on death, and often a blurred distinction on what's real and possibly imagined. Many gothic horrors don't even conclude whether any actual haunting took place or if it was all in the mind. Like Turn of the Screw for example.
Indira Well that's confusing, thanks Megan
