Horror for Newbies

So I read this whole damn thing and still don't know wtf actually happened, if anyone would like to post a detailed, spoilery synopsis. What was the link between the past and present storylines? What was with the yellow jackets and the seaweed and the sludge?

None of it made sense and it was a painful read that got to the end and told us...nothing.(less)
