I'd agree with everyone that said that they do not have to be read in the right order. You'll understand everything just fine if you read just one or two of them. Sure, if you first read, say, the tenth and then the first book you'll have to be aware that the character development is a little different and that slight details may be spoiled. But as soon as there is something that you wouldn't understand from just reading the book you're reading because it's referring to a book earlier in the series, Gerritsen always explains it at least briefly. So there should not be any trouble with this.
Concerning this specific book, however, I'd say that I'd recommend reading "The Surgeon" first. You don't absolutely have to but I think you'd enjoy it more if you read the first book first.

The author recommends reading them in order. Please refer to her comments in her own blog here: http://www.tessgerritsen.com/what-is-.... I read my first one out of order, then decided to come back and start with #1. Now I've read #2, and I do agree that these should be read in order as the plots and characters continue to develop, and past events are referred to extensively (at least in book #2).

I've read the entire series of Rizzoli and Isles. I also have read all of her other novels. As you can see, Tess Gerritsen is one of my favorite authors. It would be better to read the series of Rizzoli and Isles iin order. Although, characters and events in previous novels appear or are mentioned doesn't take away the flow of the novel or confuse you from the story your reading. Her novels had inspired me to write four published medical mystery novels.

As far as I know, they are standalone novels.

I do not read them in order and have no problem. I read them when I can get them from the library alone. Mainly on audio which our library audio is limited with good books of suspense so I grab them when they are free to borrow. Depends on the person, but I have no problem with this. Some people might though and if you can get them another way than I choose to do, you probably better. I know this question was a couple years back, but I wanted to temper an answer for anyone that reading them out of order does work. And even when you space them out like me.

If you want to read all of them, I would recommend reading the series order. Otherwise if you just feel like reading one. You'll still be able to follow the plot and understand the characters. The only problem is you can't really stop at just one. :)
I was introduced to Jane Rizzoli and Mara Isles through the TV show on TNT. The books are very different, however, I enjoyed them both very much just as separate entities- almost as if they're written in a parallel universe. In all honesty, I prefer how they're portrayed in the television series but only because the way they're written in the books just isn't what really makes for good TV.

If you are not sure whether there is a series of individual novels or is there a series of joint parts, then you can ask for help the professionals who work for the company that offers best sociology paper, they can write a professional review on a series of books and you will find out the fact of whether this series of books is solid but also the fact whether this series of books is worth being readed by you.
