Halo asked this question about The Apprentice (Rizzoli & Isles, #2):
Do you have to read the entire series of Rizzoli and Isles, or are they standalone novels ?

You'll understand everything just fine if you read just one or two of them. Sure, if you first read, say, the tenth and then the first book you'll have to be aware that the character development is a little different and that slight details may be spoiled. But as soon as there is something that you wouldn't understand from just reading the book you're reading because it's referring to a book earlier in the series, Gerritsen always explains it at least briefly. So there should not be any trouble with this.
Concerning this specific book, however, I'd say that I'd recommend reading "The Surgeon" first. You don't absolutely have to but I think you'd enjoy it more if you read the first book first.(less)
