Patty I think Jake was emotionally bound to Ursula by the care she gave his sister. I don't think he could find it in his heart to leave her despite his greater love for Mallory. I think Mallory was the unusual woman who could live with this arrangement.
Susan Grebe I don't think Mallory wanted to be married or in a more committed relationship. I think the once a year with Jake, and her belief that he was her great love, was exactly what she wanted. I started thinking this when she was in a relationship with Scott - a relationship where they got along well, the sex was good, and everything else seemed to be good. Her rationale was that she "wasn't in love with him". But I have to think that a woman who really wanted to be in a committed relationship would not have dismissed him so quickly. Many times, in an affair, you don't have to deal with all the complications of married life - finances, raising children, getting along with in-laws and friends of your spouse that you may not like etc etc . I'm not judging but an affair does create a "fairy-tale". Mallory's brother Cooper also had problems with marriage so maybe there was something they experienced as kids that made them resist marriage. Again - I think it's fine if people don't want to get married but I don't buy the idea that a very limited relationship is a "great love".
Judith Jake was Mallory's "great love", and sadly that ruined her for marriage or commitment with anyone else. A tragedy, not a fairy tale.
Kathy I agree... especially since you never felt any real love between Jake and Ursula and she was perceived as cool and difficult. Lost me when he married her anyway. And the ending was anti-climatic since it was given away in the beginning. I'm a huge fan but did not like this book.

Patricia McAlexander I talk about this in my review of the book. But your questions show why I think the book didn't really work.
