Also because he was good friends with her older brother and I believe there was a part in the book where the brother told his friends to stay away from his younger sister.
I think the attachment that grew between Ursula & Jake was greater than either one of them. Indescribable, but they were bound by Fate, or something like that. More than love, more than her being there for his sister. There was a joining of souls due to circumstance, that wasn't being in love, but greater. Nothing they could do about it.
