It's a book. It's not a woman's book or a man's book. It's a story, and those who are interested in it can read it.
Yesenia
Too many male readers see books written by women and about women, as "for" women. They lack the broad, open mind of female readers, who have read innumerable books written by men about men, for hundreds of years.
anya
last time i checked books don't have gender but okay
Sharon
What the heck is a woman's book?
Bill
As a straight, white, male, senior, former-full-time-musician I would say that this is NOT a "woman's" book (whatever that actually is to you, Diane).
What it is, to me, is a brilliant look at the relationships in and around a band (particularly as it transitions to a whole new level).

How fragile can a man's masculinity be? It's a book.
Shruthi
FFS there is no such thing as a 'woman's book'
Diane
Because no male readers have read it? Really? Why not? Because it's about a woman? Just asking.
Paige Nighland
What does this even mean? It's A BOOK. It's a story about music and love and life and challenges and I truly think most people can relate to that, whether you are a man or a woman.
NancyJ
I don't find her books to be overly emotional or romantic, if that's what you mean by "woman's book." Women far outnumber men on goodreads I believe, so I wouldn't read too much into the portion of reviews you see. The book is still very new and there aren't many reviews yet. (Also - on average - women to read more fiction, while some men prefer non-fiction.)
John Bradley
I'm about 3/4 of the way through and really enjoying it so far. I agree with those who say it isn't a "woman's" book or a "man's" book. It's a book.
Dave

Check out my review, just posted on 3/17.

I'm sorry some people were so harsh in answering your question. Surely you (Diane) did not coin the term "woman's book"!

I doubt anyone's still following this thread. Nonetheless, my mom was a reader and passed that on to me, a male. We had a running joke between us that I wouldn't read female authors. Which I tended not to. For no particular reason other than to, in fun, remind her of it. We shared that. Our surname is Taylor. She has passed. I'm thinking karma is winking at me in reading this book. I chose it noting the author had a gender-neutral given name. Now this. I'm only just into the first part of it. Enjoying it. Back at you, Mom.
Alan (The Lone Librarian) Teder
I just reviewed it and I'd say its for everyone interested in the human dynamics behind popular song-writing and performing, but it felt a bit too cynically pre-packaged fake 70's nostalgia for me and I gave it 2 stars (i.e. "it was ok" on the Goodreads scale) with a bump to 3 stars for the audiobook narration.
Danielle Rosa
You don't need a uterus to read it, so i guess it's just a regular book.
Hala
Not sure if it's a 'woman's book', but Jenkins Reid has admitted to trying to put a 'feminine' spin on the classic rock era of the 1970s that history shows simply did not exist. I think it is a romance novel definitely aimed at women, I strongly doubt many men would be interested in reading it.
Ron
I loved this book! My sex: MALE.
Last time I checked.

It's categorized as Women's Fiction on the publisher's site.
James
Well, obviously that's changed (see the many male reviewers). No, it's a book about a rock and roll band, but it does have romantic elements. I had my own band during the Seventies and Reid does a good job in depicting the struggles between musicians about what directions a band can take. The drugs and other excesses might feel a bit over the top, but are totally consistent with what Gregg Allman described in his memoir.
C Baker
No, just read it and it's really good.
Erin *Proud Book Hoarder*
No, it is not. I understand what you mean by "woman's book", but this doesn't fit. It's for any gender and shows experiences of both men and women in a band.
Paul Nelson
It's a rock and roll book. Not to mention one of the best audiobook productions ever.
T-Roy
I'm sure you're referring to who the targeted audience is. I just bought it, review forthcoming. I must say, I did hesitate and did a bit of research first because I didn't want to spend $$ on something that wouldn't interest me. As a lifetime music fan, I decided to give it a shot. I do read books written by women about women as long as it's just a great story about people in general. Of course, it also appears this site is targeting the women readers (home page shows only a woman on the beach reading) so that may have something to do with the gender of members on this site.
Diane
yes, this is a woman's book, note the few men that have read have all given it 1 star
Piepie | The Napping Bibliophile
Maybe because no male readers have read it and reviewed it?
B
Now I feel the need to go check all my books and see if they have tiny balls or vaginas hidden somewhere that I had missed so far...

Hey, I was kicked out of the children's library at age ten because I was in the Boy's Section. OMG. Went home sad, got my mother, she went back to the library and told the librarian that I should be able to take out any book I wanted and that books weren't male or female. My mother could be scary, even though she was barely five foot and sort of very conservative about most things. And THIS was in 1963 and so books do NOT have a sex.
AquaMoon
No, not a "women's book." However, it does seem the author previously wrote a bunch of 'chick lit,' or so it seems (I haven't read her other books). I think if you enjoy music and rockumentaries, you'll like this one.
Dana
I think it equally tells this story from a man/woman perspective. It's like looking into rock n roll's past so I think it can appeal to both.
Dan
: ) I'm a guy and loved this book! I gave it a 4. It didn't end quite the way I expected. It was still a good read!
T.ScottReviews
There are reviews of this book on here by men.
Noel
What's a "woman's book"? (signed a man.
Mark Porton
I don't know the answer to that - but I'm a bloke and I've just posted my review - 5 stars, loved it!
Jo
Hi Diane, oh the sensitivity of it all. After reading my opinion is that this story will most appeal to women, young women. It’s so obviously fictional situations and I’d see a young woman getting wrapped up in the fantasy. Maybe a young guy would like it too. If you’ve not lived it, it could feel dark & racy.
Melanie
I think plenty of men would thoroughly enjoy this book!
David
It doesn't matter. In fact, this recent article explains why we should read more books by/about women.
Lenin M
I am a man and i don't really categorize books by women's or men's books. I prefer to categorize them by genre, such as romance, thriller, sci fi, etc. I have favorite writers as well, man and woman writers. This book seems interesting and when I read the description and read some reviews that do not spoil the book, I look at it as a good story. Hope this helps.
PS. I plan to read it and give it a rating (not a review). I prefer to plainly rate a book whether I liked it or not.

This is such a funny question!
Lo
It’s a 70s rock and roll book.
JO.JONES
Not necessarily a women's book. Anyone who likes rock n roll, or just an interesting told tale from different points of view. I think the structure is really cool.
Jason
Did you make it to the part where she meets the italian prince in thailand?
The answer to your question is yes.
The answer to your question is yes.

Personally, this reads (or listens as I think you should do) like a VH1 special to me. It's fantastic and I think men and women would love it. It's definitely not a chick flick. It crosses over very well.
cole ✧
it is a non-binary book actually...
Craig Campbell
Is there even such a thing?

yes, allow us to all abide and be dictated by whether men are included or not.
also there are more than 2 genders, plus, teens read it too. so not "men" or "women"

It's a valid question. Don't know why everyone is getting their pants in a knot. Some books are more tailored towards women. There's a literal category called chick lit lol. My boyfriend has no interest in reading romance stories in the viewpoint of a women since those kind of books ARE more appealing to women. It's not sexist to state this.
Thom
Most likely it's to be considered "chick lit" so yes, I would say it is aimed at the female market. But having read quite a few of these kinds of books myself, I cannot see why men should skip it based on that alone.
Paula Chapman
Do you mean is it "Women's Fiction?" Because as a writer of similar books to this one, I don't like this term. It's a book. Period. Is it Upmarket Fiction? Maybe. Even if it were classified as "Women's Fiction," it does not mean only women will enjoy it.
Gagarina Babic
No, it’s unisex. I am about to recommend it to my husband as I think he’ll enjoy it just as much as I did.
Dubei Emanuel
All of you know what she meant but you act all hurt instead of answering her question.

I'm male and loved the story and the characters.

Nah, it's about Rock'N Roll, drugs, and s**. Not a lofty romantic book.

I just reviewed it!
Doug Latham
I read it. Am I a man? Yes, technically I am.
Gbolahan
This is not a woman's book.
So what if you didn't see any reviews by men?
That was me asking you an honest question, by the way. Like you asked your own honest question.

Dang Diane, You just stepped in it girl.

A book is a book, we live in 2020 why are we still gendering things like this ?!
Marcelo Benedetti
No, it's a book about a fictional rock band in the '70s. It is not solely focused on Daisy Jones by any means.
Gregg
I am male, I read it and I liked it a lot.
Spyro
I think of it as a book about the 1960's. Alas, I am old enough to remember.
Cece Beyer
I just told my husband he'd love it.
