I kept the characters straight until the very end and I got it that the two characters started merging into one with their overlapping appearances to others. What I didn't "get" was that "both" characters were referred to as Alexander in the last part. IMO Archer made a mess of what would have been a brilliant novel in his denouement.

This answer contains spoilers. Alex from New York dies in the plane crash. The purpose of having someone from the other character’s life earlier in the book mistake them for each other (Mr Rosenthal mistakes Sasha for Alex, and Charlie mistakes Alex for Sasha) is to show that both Alex and Sasha are indeed living separate lives in the same universe, rather than living in two parallel universes. When they flipped the coin, they must have split into two separate individuals (suspension of disbelief). When Vladimir orders the death of Alexander, he is referring to Sasha from Britain, who at that point is publicly known to be on the cusp of announcing his candidacy for Russian president. Donokov is the one responsible for executing the order though, and the Alexander Karpenko that he knows is the one that lives in New York (who was responsible for the CIA sending him to prison). So Donokov had the wrong Alexander killed, which is confirmed when he says “I shall not make the same mistake a second time”. Alex from New York was still vaguely considering running for Russian president, which explains his thought when the plane went down that “even he hadn’t realized just how far Vladimir would go to ensure he had no serious rivals for the presidency”. We can assume that Sasha was killed before the election, since we know that Vladimir Putin did indeed become president. So regardless of the path chosen, Alexander’s fate was the same. One might argue that the Heads You Win title (heads was America, tails was England) suggests that Alex had a “better” life on the way to the same inevitable destiny...more monetary wealth, did not lose a stillborn child plus two miscarriages, and the near-bankruptcy from the Elena business that Sasha’s family suffered. The ending was extremely obtuse though, and Archer could have left some larger clues.

At least you know you are not by yourself in being confused by this ending. I have no idea which character was in the plane. Obviously neither becomes Russian president, but it would be nice to know which of the two characters I've been reading about lived or died. One clearly lives and gets defeated by old friend Vladimir, but which one? Did the survivor return home (US/England) and continue with life? Did Putin just kill him later? The ultimate answer....I don't care. It was a bad book. Starting something new and moving on to a book that makes sense.

Were Alex and Sasha both real? They were each mistaken as each other when they visited each other's 'territory'. That threw me off

The book title is heads you win. In chapter one Alexander said heads to America tails to Britain. Are we to assume he went to America? Loved the book til the end then so disallusioned

I kind of feel that both of them die in the end which is to say that you can't really change your destiny whatever your upbringing has been- Alex and Sasha were to die and not be the President as people kept reminding them was their destiny.

Great story, brilliant idea for a novel. Until the ending.......in our lives we only get chance to read so many books........I feel like I've wasted one of my chances. Do you think he's left the ending for a follow up.......seems to be the trend nowadays.

Heads or tails signals each player or character has a 50/50 chance. Since the "What if.,," question about their lives would have been like had mother and son boarded the other ship, the constant switching between their lives in the USA versus England led me to believe the author was detailing the two options. Using the Alex in America scenario, Alex and his family died in the plane crash. The British plane landed safely but the character will not live to take office. Vladimir was instrumental in Eleanor's husband and her son as their deaths promote his career goals.

Sasha is the one who died on the plane.
Sasha's plane Aeroflot 409 is the one that takes off first.
During the crash landing the pilot is saying mayday for flight AF409.
We know Sasha was chasing his presidential Ambition which he regrets as he notes how much he didn't realise Vladimir would go to not have an opponent.
Also, we know that Alex's plane takes off second because the captain says traffic control told him to wait for an Aeroflot plane to depart first.
After Sasha's plane crashes, Alex's plane is the one being referred to as continuing on its flight unaware of the tragedy (as it was already established it was the second one).
Also when the cabin door opens at the airport, Alex is the one who steps out first.. perhaps an indication that he's coming off a private jet?
But his impromptu speech and declaring that he was going to run for presidency when he'd just come for a funeral and also just got Evelyn off the board was strange as Alex was never written to want to take up politics as he kept declining the offer. (Though the beginning of his speech sat the airport was reflecting the one he gave in Davos)...
Still an unnecessarily confusing end...had to re-read those last few chapters.

Alex dies in the plane crash. It’s says Alexander looked back at his only child when he got off the plane. Alex had two children, Sasha had one

I'm glad I'm not the omly one who just didn't get this book. Iike Archer's books but he's tried to be too clever with this one, and there was too much detail; it got a bit boring but kept listening...then totally confused at the end. Weren't they both Alex at the end? So Archer merges them and Alex emerges, but then the comment about not making the mistake a second time, suggesting the 2 men were real.....wouldn't read it again.

Jeffrey Archer indeed wrote an excellent book. In the ending, Sasha dies in an accident while Alex survives and lands in Russia. In the conclusion, Jeffrey Archer refers to both of them as Alexander Karpenko. With the twist of fate, the same character ends up in two different countries: one in America and one in Britain. They thrive in business, socially, establish a good reputation, and make a place in politics, proving themselves as suitable presidential candidates in Russia.
The moral of the story at the end is that anyone who escapes Russia becomes Alexander Karpenko. Whether you go to America, Britain, or anywhere else, become whoever you want, earn money, establish yourself in their parliament, and have a good life. However, never dare to challenge the KGB and attempt to take over Russia. If you return as an opponent, you are another Alexander, soon to face the consequences. One dead, another to go. All Alexanders will be crushed. This is Russia. All rules, and expertises fails here ... KGB is boss and always the boss.
That's precisely what Jeffrey Archer conveys at the end.

The ending is highly confusing and we can extract our own versions due to ambiguities.
I think Sasha and his family were on the flight which crashed. As one line in the last chapter indicated it:- "Alexander turned to look at his family and felt guilty that he'd allowed his ambition to override their safety." It was Sasha ambition for Presidency.
In another story, When the other flight lands, the story indicates that Alexander was unprepared, for the speech and the overwhelming welcome from the crowd, which means it can be Alex. Also the last line of the chapter where "Donokov" says:- I shall not make the same mistake a second time." refers to the character Ivan Donokov, who was in Alex story only.
Even if this clarifies the characters plot, I am still confused as to why the sitting Prime Minister be so afraid of a foreigner returning to homeland just to contest an election. It's a long journey to get nominated for Presidency in any country when one is starting from the first step.

I feel that the plane crash killed Alex and the end made use realize that Vladimir would later kill Sasha and become president. Clearly Sasha survived long enough to make his announcement.

I have read this book twice and I still have no idea what happened in the end. Are they two different characters and did they both died. Read many Jeffrey Archer book but this leaves me really thinking is this what I am to expect of this author.

In Books 1 and 7 he was Alexander and in Books 2-6 he alternated between Sasha in England and Alex in NY. Were Chapters 2-6 just an elaborate dream on Alexander's part. How else would that explain how both Sasha and Alex had the same mother, Elena, who was a pizza cook in both cities?
