Yes you are right:) it is most definitely Sasha who ends up being killen in the plain crash and Alex lands in St Petersburg.
1) Sasha ha commented about Vladimir stopping that low in the run pursuit of presidency. Alex would not have known that.
2) When Alex arrived, he was certainly not prepared as in he was startled by the crowd, and it says in the book “ he took a moment to gather his thoughts “ why would he if it was Sasha, as he had a speech ready whilst only Alex would need to gather his thoughts for he was taken by surprise.
3) and precisely most evident fact why Sasha got killed and not Alex as others claim. Vladimir knew only about his rival Sasha that is running for presidency and not about buisnessman Alex who had no intention of politics for that matter and obviously they knew which aircraft he flies on as it was public aircraft and him being a public figure. Alex had his own jet and was flying over to attend a funeral so they would not have known about him. What is a little more difficult to comprehend is Alex’s sudden change of heart to become a president on the spot, perhaps he was moved by the cheering crowd.
Overall whilst it was unexpected to see the two alternatives collide sometimes i understood the concept, but is better not to give it too much thought as it is rather twisting
