asked:
Dr. Fung if you revise this book can you include a chapter on emotional eating? A lot of the advice was matter-of-fact like I can just flip a switch & won't crave ice cream anymore. Sometimes it IS that simple (e.g. I am fasting more than ever; it really hasn't been nearly as hard as my brain made it out to be.) In a general sense there's an emotional attachment to food that I feel was overlooked in the book. Thanks.

Eat more fat? I think that's what Fung or Taubes would say.
Because "emotional eating" only came about as an explanation after the failure of Calories In/Out and the increasing obesity epidemic. Rather than take a critical look at CiCo the moral and behavorial explanations were invented such as emotional eating and the obese are lazy. Neither of which I believe anymore.
It's addiction. And all the ups and downs that come with the drug addiction of sugar. You eat sugar, it feels good. Then you crash. Feel hungry and blue. And eat more. That's the cycle of "emotional eating", but sugar is the problem (and lack of adequate essential fats). Not the emotions.
Fat turns off the switch that craves sugar. Is satisfying. And regulates hormones including those involving mood. Cut out sugar and eat more fat.

While I agree it is a common problem, I don't know what a chapter would do...I mean you need to notice it, which you have. And him telling you it exists doesn't change much, for me at least. And I doubt he left out any "tricks" he knows of. I think general habit change tactics would help the most here...
Don't buy what you don't want to eat. Don't let yourself get stressed if possible, as that'll trigger a dopamine craving. Find non-food ways to feel better if possible (say a movie, or trip to nature for a walk). Replace what you used to do with something new (it's harder to only stop something, but easier to distract with something new/different). Etc...

Hi Melinda, I know this is unsolicited advice but I found something that helped me a lot. I read the diet book called Bright Line Eating. For me it was the perfect partner to this book. I would say that BLE is to self-control what The obesity code is to metabolism. I didn't get into the actual diet but it gave me a whole new way to look at my self control and cravings.

Have you read Gretchen Rubin's "Better Than Before"? I found that figuring out my habit type and knowing that I'm a moderator helped me with food issues.
