Philip Agree with your comments on the ending - but also found the whole first half of the book to be unnecessary backstory. Was her lousy mother and search for her father - much less that whole digression into Haiti - really important to the plot? So...an unnecessary first half and a disappointing ending - doesn't leave a whole lot left to love!
Dan The last 30% of the book required too much magical thinking. This one is not up to Lehane's usual high standard in my opinion.
Philk81 Yes, extremely disappointing. Very rushed, disjointed and unrealistic toward that last quarter. From a D. Lehane fan it pains me to say - 3 stars... Had some good tension buildup and scenes but this one got a bit too far fetched at the end.
Kind of a combo of Gone Girl/Girl on the Train with shades of The Game (Michael Douglas) and a touch of Deathtrap thrown in (when he suddenly appears in the back seat like that). Yoww!
Mary I think this book unfortunately is a lazy pastiche of ideas which don't hold together at all. You must suspend all disbelief to think that the traumatized protagonist in the first two thirds, for whom riding the escalator is a major achievement, can instantly morph into a gun-toting, punch-throwing badass. "See? Cured you of that problem!" Yeah, not buying it.

A friend sent me "The Given Day" for Christmas last year -- I will return to that since it seems more coherent and well-thought-out (and based in reality) than this pay-the-mortgage, pay-the-kids'-tuition kind of book.
Robin Johnson I think the author is leaving a lot of room for sequels with this 2 charactors.Anyone agree?

Jennifer Murphy I agree wholeheartedly with most of the comments here. Honestly, there was an exact point in the book that I thought for sure that she had a mental break or was afflicted by some sort of psychosis, and all the events moving forward had all been in her head. The entire last part of the book was exceptionally unbelievable, and I was convinced that I was right - that we were seeing in the view of a person who had a break with reality. Why on earth was the search for her father/relationship with her mother so important to spend so long on? Really disappointed, as this was my first Lehane book, and I feel it had so much more potential based on the first half. It very quickly fell apart.
Ann Disappointing and much less than I expect from Dennis Lehane. He nearly always rates five stars from me, on of the few writers who does.

It felt definitely rushed and disjointed I started it when it first came out, got bogged down and returned it to Amazon, blasphemy I know.

Lehane is a fine writer, one of our best. I shall continue to read his books right off the press

Carmen I think the author respects his readers to understand that Rachel will indeed take Brian with her to their new life. She had to be sure she could completely trust him first. I do hope Dennis Lehane does a sequel covering their new life. I'm getting ready to reread all his books since I've run out of them!

Kathleen I feel the last- maybe 1/3?- of the book fell apart and had a totally different tone than the rest. I found the first part of the book ok and was readable. I am a big Lehane fan and love the references to Boston (I live in a Boston suburb). This was really disappointing.
James Emery An ambiguous ending, to me, is an easy and cheap out. The author is either selling out for a subsequent sequel (but even then a plot arc should be completed and an overarching plot continued--which here nothing is concluded) or it is lazy. How do I want this novel to end? What is the best way for my characters to react? Not sure...just leave it up to the reader to fill it in.
Penny To me, the novel is disappointing, but the ending isn't. It forces the reader to extrapolate based on what is known so far. Brian is a skilled contingency planner, and Rachel brings a lot to the table with her sharpness and ability to think logically. I don't need the details to know they are going to survive.
