I feel like I'm the only one who hates chaol? He's been my least favorite character from the start. Loyal beyond being able to think for yourself, prejudice against all those different than himself, mean, stubborn, and the exact kind of person I dislike. And now because of him I have to wait another year for the ending of this series. Wonderful.

Lara The Tower of Dawn has been sitting on my bookshelf unread since it first came out and I STILL can't bring myself to read it because Chaol is just so irritating! And boring. And whiney. And self-righteous. And ignorant. He was about a 3 star person in book one/two but after that he just plummeted into full on A-hole. Not only does he always get things wrong but when he finally realizes he's made a mistake he gets all whiney and needy. In book 4 he literally just uses Faliq for pity sex.

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BRING MYSELF TO READ HIS BOOK?!

Chaol you are actually worse than Tamlin. And that's saying something!

Screw you Tamlin.
Penny I COMPLETELY AGREE. Hated him from the beginning (I totally shipped doraelin) and he became such a prick in QoS that I just don't give a damn about what happens to him anymore. And yes, this wait will kill me.

I hate you Chaol
Phoebe same here, even after reading the book i still hate chaol sooooo much. idk but i ended up skipping entire chapters of chaol and only reading about nesryn. This book has even ruined my opinion of yrene just cause shes always with chaol. I HATE CHAOL AND HE IS RUINING SO MANY GREAT CHARACTERS. I LITERALLY FEEL OBLIGED TO HATE ANY CHARACTER THAT EVEN LIKES CHAOL
MQ No, you are not the only one. I freaking hate him. He uses the excuse that he "grew up like that" but Dorian did too. Instead, Dorian grew up trying to go against the king and stood up for what he thought was right. Come on Chaol you actually think that children are in slave camps because they are vicious murderers? NO CHAOL ITS BECAUSE THE KING IS EVIL. Not to mention even after learning out all of the bad things about the king he was still hesitant to join the rebels, and only fully did because he was forced to. God, I hate Chaol.
Sophia same i don't care about chaol like at all i don't even care if he dies
lorena I totally agree! I was a full-on Dorian and Celaena shipper until Rowan came along. Rowan's the best!!! I really enjoyed this book but I still don't like Chaol much and I just want to know how Aelin is doing!!!!
Mafalda de Sousa Ok, I clearly feel like I'm in the minority here but I actually *LOVE* Chaol. These comments have me feeling that I need to speak up and defend my boy Lord Westfall!

He's been one of my favourite main characters from the beginning and though I recognise he is not the most immediately likeable character, to me he's the one that feels the most real and relatable. I actually very much enjoyed going through his journey in this book and loved the romance and adventures within it. He starts off as clearly a very closed minded and stubborn person and his beliefs are completely challenged and torn down. He makes mistakes because of that. On top of that, being someone who highly relied in his position as Captain and soldier, losing his physical abilities and becoming so helpess is probably completely world shattering and forced him to have to rediscover a completely new sense of self. I feel this is a journey that is very relatable to most people in this world and therefore I appreciate how human he feels, in a universe where everyone is so powerful. I think he's one of the characters that shows the most growth over the course of the series and to be honest, I commend him for it.

Now, I can't say the same about Nesryn. I have to admit I struggled a lot to read her portions in this book and I honestly could not care any less about her adventures with Sartaq. For some reason she rubs off on me the wrong way, mostly because she seems just so bland in my eyes. She's the only reason I won't give this a 5. In any case, I recognise her value to the plot of the series so eh... It is what it is!

All in all though, Maas is as always a brilliant writter and I most definitely want to see more of these characters going forward!

Lionella Chaol was such a whiney little bitch after book 2. However, I am glad that I read Tower of Dawn so I can loath him a little bit less. While still having his annoying and angsty moments, he definitely had some much needed personal growth happen. I wasn't going to read it at first but I'm definitely glad I did.
Vanessa OMG...MY FRIEEEENDDSS!!! I know you wrote this a year ago...but I just finished this stupid book so now I have to rant..and I'm sorry.

I have hated Chaol since "the body on the bed" incident. I didn't want to read anymore about him and was happy he was no longer in the books. I pre-ordered this book and said to myself, "Hey, it's a novella...you can get yourself through this!"

Then Sarah comes out and was like, "JK lolz. Guys, I have forgotten how to write novellas!" Leaving me quietly raging ಠ_ಠ

I have TRIED to read this for a year and half and have been unable to do so. The only way I pushed through was by listening to an audiobook I found of it while doing chores. There was zero chance I was going to finish this by staring at each word, slogging through Chaol's whiny self-hatred.

You know how Sarah connects books together...so my only recommendation is if you've had trouble starting turn the audiobook on and power through.
Hurain i hated him since the beginning of time and all the characteristic that you are talking about can be summed up in this simple word:
narrow-minded.

Even though, i shipped Dorian with Celeana, the fact remains that i hated him as a person/character since the I laid eyes of him but i couldn't really pin point what it was that was bothering me.
Now i realize that his duty and loyalty made him very short sighted to the point where he couldn't really put himself in the shoes of others. In simple words, narrow minded.

I do admit tho, tower of dawn really lets us see choal from a new light, and shows how he develops as a character. you should see, its pretty awesome.
Stace Instead of skipping the parts that include Chaol, give it a try. The seventh book isn't coming out till 2018 anyways. In the other books I hated Chaol, but after reading Tower of Dawn I learn more about him (and also the interesting new characters). The past that haunts him, the regret, guilt and anger for what had happened in his life. Give this book a chance, or in this case Chaol. Remember there always two sides to a story. I hope you agree. Happy Reading!
Hillary Yes, I mean Chaol is what in our world we would call a racist when it comes to magic and it causes so many problems. Like the fact that he knew how to free magic and was trying to hide it from everyone who would free it. His prejudice made him too stupid and blind to realize it was the only way to defeat the king. smh and the way he acted towards Aelin simply because he couldn't make her his little simple wife instead of the queen and warrior she was meant to be. I loved when Dorian called him out on trying to accept or love people in pieces and when he couldn't blame them for it. He's also a hypocrite he acts so self-righteous but really he hates magic because he's just jealous which is revealed when he says to Aelin that he doesn't want to tell her how to free magic because it makes it unfair between those with magic and those like him without. I could go on and on. He has so many of the characteristics I despise in people
madeline I agree, I am reading this book to better understand the last book. Chaol is whiny and blames Aelin for stuff that isn't her fault. I feel like he is one of those people who only show compassion for people like him or if he has gone through something similar. And I think loyal beyond being able to think for yourself is accurate.
Rustom Yes Chaol has always been the worst character but don't let that stop you from reading Tower of Dawn and don't skip any chapters its a brilliant book and is crucial to the whole series. Plus there are more characters than just Chaol that the book focuses on and it's all very interesting. Please read it to see for yourself
Patrícia De jesús Omg I hate him too, I thought I was the only one but I HATE reading about him, he is sooooooooo boring
Hailey You're not the only one who hates Chaol. I feel that he should just... go. His character is not really needed, and the moment Aelin hated him, I did too. He's just, how should I put this? Boring. Yet, this story revolves around him.
《 sophie •°○☆ 》 I don't really like Chaol either (I was ready to murder him after QoS) but the story is essential and there are many good characters. Chaol also becomes a lot better.
NG Yabili I only manage to read this cause i wanted to see how Yrene handles Chaol's injury. The dude himself is by far my least favorite character. There are some really jaw dropping revelations about the Valgs near the end of the book so it's worth giving it a shot
Lamees Alrasheed you took the words right out of mouth. i hate him so much that it took me a month to bring myself to read the book, he is annoying beyond words i don't know how three amazing women fell for him and one ended being actually married to him. he keeps blaming alien when he is the blame from the start thank god Nysren was there so the book wouldn't be that boring.
Clementine 100% with you on this. I stopped caring about Chaol after book 1 so imagine finding a whole book about him at book 6 ? What the heck! I think Sarah J Mass wrote more about Chaol in the whole series than Rowan and Aedion in total. She has completely missed the plots.
Ned M Exactly what I was thinking. Turns out I'm not the only one.
Tanya I agree, I am a little surprised he has a full book to himself? He isn't a character I could read a whole book about. So I will have to wait until next year to read more on this series, and hope I can catch up on what I missed in this book
Kristina I cannot agree more!
Ilaria O Nope I hate him too though it took me until the 3 book
Rowyn No i literally hate him, i'm about to read tower of dawn and everyone is telling me i can't skip it but i really just don't want to read about him yk
Brittany I hate him to. struggling to tandem read 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Zinka i can't stand nesryn xD i am reading this right now and i just want to skip pages with her. I never seen a more rude and moaning main character. Her home is baddd, evil, dirty, she loves Chaol but forgets that in 1. min of book, but this place that she never seen but her family is from here is amazing right away, clean, smart ,the best. She is so annnnoying, gosh xD
Lizard Your not the only one I didn't like Chaol at all until the end of Queen of Shadows when he realizes he's been a jerk to everyone and starts to change. Even after he changes a little he still annoys me though.
Ashima Ahmed I hated Chaol since book 1. I still hate him in TOD but I'm actually loving the new setting and the new characters
Artemis Fuck Chaol I liked him at the start but after book two he became annoying and to dedicated to Dorian. And when he learned about aelin/celaena he couldn't accept her. In the words of (actually a great character) Dorian "you don't get to wish that she was someone else, right now you have to decide whether she's you enemy or ally ". I might have mixed up the wording so please tell me if I did and send the correct quote. I haven't read tower of dawn yet but I'm gonna read right now since I just finished empire of storm. Lets hope his character improves.
Edit: His character does improve. I like him as much as the other characters now that he got rid of his salty angst . He finally accepts that magic and change in general isn't bad and although this just a romantic healing process with a political side plot it as an amazing book. Nesryn was my favourite character and is currently drawing lysandra for the place of second favourite ( first favourite is Fleetfoot, obviously ). Her side story made me ship again after becoming salty that doraelin wasn't happening and I was almost squealing in delight when she talked to sartaq at the end. Yrene is a perfect match for Chaol and we finally have a character who isn't that good of a fighter. Spoiler alert (for the rest of the edit ).
The life bond thing seems extremely interesting and I would love to see it be explored further in kingdom of ash, a perfect scenario is where he can severe his bond to save yrene but has to Die therefore ending his character in a noble manner.
Kelley C I did not like Chaol much either in all the books up to this one. But for whatever reason, this book made him much more likable to me. So maybe if you can give it a try, it might change your feelings too!
Heather This will give us the crucial information about how Chaol etc play a part in the war that is going on and how they contribute to what takes place in the next book. I know not everyone is a fan of Chaol, but to be fair, not everyone of us is a fan of Rowan either so if I can get through all those scenes, then I think its fair to say you can give this a shot especially since it was included in the series for a reason by the author and without reading it will not have the whole story when the next one comes out. Just a little Devil's advocate for Chaol. I know everyone says he was so mean to Aelin, but to be fair, they were both very hard and unforgiving toward one another and their inability to communicate things was two sided and not just on Chaol. He was going through a lot of conflicting emotions and put in a hard place to choose sides but he did what was right in the end and that is what is important, he evolved just as Celaena did into Aelin.
