The Viking Portable Library

The mission of the Viking Portable Library is “to present a considerable quantity of widely popular reading in a volume so small that it can conveniently be carried and read in places where a book of ordinary format would be a hindrance.”

The idea for these books was originally proposed by Alexander Woollcott, who put together the first collection intended for servicemen in World War II.

Note: Some numbers in the library were skipped, with the earliest being #54. Therefore, after #53 the Viking Portable Library number will not match the list number.

Also, many books were re-issued, some with new numbers and some without new numbers. If a book was issued a new number, it is listed again for each new number.
