A super sweet story about Nick and Charlie's friendship that turns into something more. This is the first of three volumes, so it kind of leaves you hanging with Nick sort of coming to a realization, but not quite sure what to do with it. Apparently, the author wrote a novel (her debut YA novel) about Nick's older sister Tori (Solitaire), and Charlie and Nick were in it as boyfriends, so these three volumes are sort of a prequel/backstory for that setting. I loved the artwork and the fr 4.5 stars

June 2022 reread. It's been a year since I first discovered this wonderful series and I just recently binged the Netflix series and realized just how much I missed Charlie and Nick, so it's time to do a reread of the graphic novels. Some thoughts:

* Can they be any cuter?!
* This is even better the second time around
* I was surprised at how well the Netflix series follows the graphic novel
* This volume ends the morning after Henry's birthday party, so if my memory is correct, the first season in the Netflix series covers the first two volumes
* They cast the actors amazingly well and the chemistry between Joe Locke and Kit Connor is exactly what you see on the pages. Can they be any cuter?!
* I can't believe how well the actress for Tori matches what I see in the pages.
* I didn't remember some of the things the Rugby coach said in the graphic novel, but now I see that they took her words from the graphic novel as well.
* Tao seemed angrier in the series than in the graphic novels. In the graphic novels, he seemed much more concerned about Charlie's well-being as the primary motivation to warn him to be careful. But they ultimately did a good job with him in the Netflix series and they cast him well.
* Honestly, the whole cast was wonderful and really reflected the novels well. I can't wait for future seasons!
* After reading these last year and then watching the series, I want to buy this entire series, but it seems to be back ordered everywhere I look, so I'll have to give it a few months, I think. But I'm kind of waiting for the fifth one and wondering if I can get a boxed set. We shall see. ...more

I recently watched the Netflix adaptation of this graphic novel and couldn't stop myself from grinning the entire time. I can't remember the last time I experienced such a feel-good story, if there ever was another before this. And it definitely was an experience. I was invested from the first episode and loved being immersed in this world with Nick and Charlie. Something like four hours later, with a lot of laughter and happy tears sandwiched between beginning and end, I was absolutely smitten. ...more

Pardon me while I just gush about this amazing series.

I can't even begin to express how fucking much I love and adore this story. It's literally perfect and so wonderfully written and executed. Not to mention the show, which stays so true to the source material unlike any book to show/movie adaptation I've ever seen. You truly get to see the each individual moment and scene come to life, including the word for word dialogue and setting and all those little details. Any changes they have made are Pardon me while I just gush about this amazing series.

Any changes they have made are so welcomed and just make the story even better. They add onto it and enhance it, rather than destroy it.
But that's enough about the show, this is a book review after all.

The way this story and these characters are written, is just so real and authentic. Nothing feels forced for the sake of drama or conflict. It's a real world setting, with real world conflict and struggles that are felt and dealt with in a really real way. And going back to the show for a second, the actors portray all of this in a very real way. Like, they don't feel like some made up characters in some show, they feel like real, normal people, that you would meet and talk to and be friends with in real life. Not some far-fetched stereotypical, cliches as you constantly see in North-American media of what high school and teenagers are like. Which isn't bad per say, I mean it's fiction for a reason, but it's really nice and refreshing to read and watch a story like this; where the characters and story don't feel fictitious, but like real people that live in our world.

The story itself also just really hits home for queer people and the queer experience. Or at least it does for this gay. It's a queer story written, written by a queer author, for a queer audience. And I love it. I love the portrayal of trying to figure out ones sexuality, I can really identify with Nick in that way. The confusion, the google searches... all of it. It's so authentic.

I don't think I will ever love a story as much as I love this one. I can't even come close to accurately explaining how much I love this story and these characters and their friendships and every little thing that makes this story so amazing. Like, how there's no unnecessary drama just for the sake of having drama or that the characters haven't been reduced to shitty cliches that makes them predictable, wishy-washy assholes. Nick is literally the sweetest, kindest, most compassionate, caring and respectful guy. Him and Charlie both deserve the world.

This is by far the best queer story/representation I've ever come across. It gives me all the feels. And is 100% my comfort show/book. ...more
