4.5 stars, rounded up. Alex Stern, a girl who has had a difficult life so far, finds herself at Yale, part of a secret magical society that oversees other secret magical societies. But does she belong there? And what exactly is she, that she can see ghosts, and maybe more? I loved the dark, gritty, no-punches-pulled style of writing, Alex feels real and the dialogue sparks. I just finished this book and feel untethered- how do I go back to my ordinary, magic-less life? This is the first book that I have read by Leigh Bardugo but I own a few. And i plan on digesting them immediately. This book was amazing- i'm literally in awe over her word play. Leigh might be one of the most intelligent writers I have ever experienced. This was a dark book about secret societies in Yale- full of dark magic, violence, intellect, and imagery- and I'm not ready to let it all go. I wa ...more
