Oh my goodness, this book. I have had this on my TBR shelf for a while and I honestly forgot all about it. Until the other day when the 4th of the series popped up on my Goodreads as it’s coming out later this year. I added my name to the wait-list for the e-book at our local library and had it within a couple days. I honestly don’t have words for this book. I haven’t read a book like this in a while. I added my name to the wait-list for the e-book at our local library and had it within a couple days. I honestly don’t have words for this book. I haven’t read a book like this in a while. One where all day when I wasn’t reading, I was counting down the minutes when I could get back to my book.

This book is a little difficult to explain. It basically is about a time in the future when Mars has been made livable and there are various classes. The story revolves around Darrow, who is a Red. He is part of the lowest class and is in charge of continuing to make Mars livable for the Golds, the high class citizens. The Reds find out they have been betrayed ad Golds are already living in parts of Mars. Some parts of the story at the beginning get pretty dark and depressing. There wasn’t much of a slow build-up to how horrible the Reds are treated. Once the deception is learned, naturally an uprising is discovered and Darrow joins to take on the Golds and make life better for him and his family.

He undergoes multiple pretty gruesome surgeries to become a Gold himself. It’s a long, painful process and once it is successful, he is given the task of breaking down the system from within. He joins an institute for the young Golds and they participate in a game that reminded me a little of Hunger Games meets capture the flag. They’re separated into houses and the last house standing wins.

The whole basis of the games is horrific as well as leading up to the games. There are so many twists and cases of deception and I couldn’t get enough of it. It was a tad confusing at times as there are numerous houses and some different language that can be hard to follow at times. But it all comes together at the end and it all made sense.

I honestly have not read a book like this before. The writing was wonderful and I loved the characters. It was one of those books where you are supposed to hate everyone around him because that’s who he is trying to take down. But there were so many characters who I just adored.

Do yourself a favor and pick up this book. I have already put my name on the list for the second so whoever around here has that e-book checked out needs to hurry up so I can see where this story goes haha.

Shelves: science-fiction

Really enjoyable, fast-paced read. I flew right through these 400 pages and that seems to happen less and less often for me lately, so much appreciated.

While it took me awhile to get into it, by about halfway through I was completely engrossed with the story. I always love a good science fiction story, and Red Rising did not disappoint. The world in which it takes place in was by far the most interesting part for me. The more I read, the more I found myself wanting to know more about this world the characters inhabit.
