Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy this book. I just don't know yet how to rate this one. Maybe 3.5 stars would do this justice. It made me worked hard right until it reaches 30% where the philosophical, exposition-heavy debates became less grating.

The strongest point of the book is undoubtedly One Esk/Breq, whose voice is unique and endearing. The way the author described the multiple, sometimes omniscient, conscience, I just gobbled the whole thing. Breq also had some personal quirks that I can

Really really dug this book. As any of you know who have ever heard me gush about Excession, I have a majorly awkward love for any story involving sentient spaceships. That being said, what I really enjoyed about this book was the way it managed to so fully realize its characters and universe, without ever saying much about them or doing much detailed explaining. That being said, the ending felt a little rushed and a little forced. Rather than sign up for a whole trilogy, I think I would have ra ...more

A sprawling space epic narrated by an unusual character. Breq was once a warship in the service of the mighty Radch, who "annexed" new worlds and spread "civilization" far and wide. After three thousand years, machinations in the upper reaches of Radch space destroy most of Breq, leaving her only a single body and a singular quest for revenge. ...more

Apparently tea is universal.

This book was fantastic and is going on my "favorites" shelf. Ancillary Justice is a great sci-fi book that touches upon one of the classic sci-fi tropes, the question of artificial intelligence, and then uses it as a jumping board to explore emotions such as love, revenge, justice and more.

The reader is taken on a journey through a galactic empire that is on the brink of tearing itself apart and the book uses that starting point to explore why, even on a personal l

Well, despite several attempts I never got more than 60 percent in. While I a fan of dystopian fiction, hard science fiction and space operas, the main character's POV was hard to identify with. The revenge did not motivate. The AI split personality and societal gender flips did not engage. Time and place did not sink in. It felt really fragmented to me. I think this novel could work if one had a completely silent place to absorb it in a sustained stretch, but I struggled mightily. So I would sa ...more

It was well written. One of the thing that struck me several times is how this could have been written by Ian M. Banks and inserted right into his universe.

I never seem to know how much I love a particular character until that character is threatened with death or killed. When my heart leaps into my throat, I know. I've felt rather passive about this book up until now. I like the story, I love the writing, but now I realize I adore the characters. It snuck up on me, unexpected, and now I have no choice but to fly through this book as quickly as possible to find out what happens. ...more
