I don't know, I got to the lesbian reminiscence that didn't really have much of a point and paused. It felt too much like titillation for titillation's sake, especially since the character doing the remembering insists quite strongly she's straight, but goes in-depth into that memory. Anyway, I've been debating whether or not I want to finish the novel, especially since the rest of what I read didn't really capture my attention. I've read some other reviews and I think I'm just gonna shelve this

So when I try to mentally place a book reading experience along that spectrum from enjoyable to painful, one of the things I ponder is “would I recommend this book, and if so, to who?”
And when I start thinking back over this book, one of the first things I run into is that i wouldn’t really recommend this book to anyone. I wouldn’t tell people to drop it and step away if they were caressing it in a bookstore. But I wouldn’t give them a knowing wink and say “ohhh… you’re go ...more

This is Murakami at his most challenging, Murakami-est. It is at times a frustrating read and requires endurance through the occasional boring and rather vile bits. But there are charming characters, lyrical writing, and a crazy fractured parallel world as compensation. I loved Murakami's meta commentaries on writing. Too bad Tengo wasn't available to ghost edit this book. It took 400 pages to get to The Town of Cats, the excerpted story from The New Yorker. I wish there was an illustrated child

This was my first time reading Murikami. I'm on the fence as to whether I liked or loved the book. Much of it was so beautiful, atmospheric, and other worldly. He seemed to be a little repetitive and at times a bit of an overkill on the descriptions. I'm glad I was listening rather than reading. The readers voices were so perfect that they added to the overall feel of the story. If I had been reading, I might not have been able to keep going because it was such a long story.

Well, it took me six months but I finished it. not sorry I read it but if I had it to do again, I probably wouldn't read it again.

Not like any book I've read before. A very ... unique experience.
