Well, Matt Frewer/Max Headroom is a character in the book, so I dont know how he would work as a Halliday...
Granted. However when I read the book, I had already mentally cast him. It was just lagniappe he was actually in the book. :)

I think the best ever casting for James Halliday would be awesome 80s icon Matt Frewer, he of Max Headroom..."
Kodi looks a little young? Wade is supposed to be like 18. Matt Frewer looks awesome though.

Apparently, I can't do math, lol. Logan Lerman might be able to do it. Didn't much care for Percy Jackson the movie, but I did like him.http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0503567/
Wozniak would be the perfect Og... That is exactly who I pictured as I read the book, just in a slightly older form.
I don't think this girl acts, but you can't really get closer. (Picture in link)http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments...
I had the impression that Og was sort of modeled after Wozniak, so that could work. And I have to agree that Matt Frewer would make a fun Halliday.I like Emma Stone as Art3mis. Not sure what to do about H.
As for Wade, I'd rather see an unknown. I couldn't picture any actor that I know in the part. Particularly since there are at least three completely different physical looks that Wade goes through.
H could be played be played by Gabourey Sidibe (Based of the Novel Push by Saphire).Sorrento must be played by Michael C. Hall!
Isn't Emma stone a little too glamorous to play artemis? Maybe her avatar; but I would want the "real" Artemis to be more average looking.
Art3mis- Mae Whitman http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0926165/Og- John Malkovich
Sorrento- Michael C. Hall/Billy Crudup
Aech- Gabourey Sidibe
Wade Watts- Unknown
Aunt- Siobhan Fallon http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0266441/

I think Amber Riley ("Mercedes" in Glee) would make a fantastic H. Could still pass for an 18-19 year old (she's already doing it on Glee).

The book is set in a dystopian future, where the kids rediscover 80s culture, but the general tone of the book is a bit on the serious side.
Certainly there a lot of dark undertones and the main character (and just about everyone else) is using the virtual world to escape what the world has become.
That isn't to say there isn't any humor to be found in the book that couldn't be emphasized in the movie.

I think it's easy to be distracted by the nostalgia factor to disregard the seriousness of problems the world was facing.
Personally I had a lot of fun reading it, but Cline paints a very dark future.

Yeah the darkness was always there but Cline wasn't taking paragraphs to push it down your throat, he snuck it in with all the rest. I came away completely entertained but seriously thinking how bad a future of virtual reality could be.
Yea, I wasn't saying it was a bummer of a book to read. I like it despite the undertone of vision of a dark future, primarily because it was so damn entertaining.
Wade: Josh Hutchersonhttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm1242688/
Art3mis: Mae Whitman
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0926165/
Aech: Atticus Dean Mitchell
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3620184/
Halliday: Matt Frewer
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001242/
This movie needs to hurry up and be made!
Parzival = Logan Lerman http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0503567/?r...
Percy Jackson asside, he was lead supporting in "Gamer" 2009
Art3mis = Mae Whitman
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0926165/?r...
She & LL (Above) have chem from "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". She also was the x-gf in "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" (2010)
Aech = Chord Overstreet / Amber Riley
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3432881/?r...
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3232025/?r...
This could be a make-it role for these two. The pair of them have enough screen chem from Glee that passing for alter-egos might not be that far a stretch. Similarities from the book also pair the two nicely. Overall, I feel this would be a good fit for the role and a possible Breakout for Chord.
Nolan Sorrento = Jon Hamm
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0358316/?r...
Mad Men... Need I say More?
Daito = Will Yun Lee
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0498449/?r...
Shoto = Ken Yamamura
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4576636/?r...
James Donovan Holiday = Jeff Goldblum
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000156/?r...
or = Matt Frewer http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001242/
Goldblum has the natural Hyper-kinetic speech pattern that Cline often touches on. Tall and Lanky, he also has the presence to pull off Anorak.
Matt Frewer can absolutely get the job done; and casting him to play Halliday while possibly reprising his role as Max would be a swell fit of homage for the seasoned actor.
Ogden Morrow = Oliver Platt
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001624/?r...
or Jeff Daniels http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001099/?r...

I'll post more later, but I wanted to knock the first two big ones out immediately.
