This was an incredible work. Just incredible. She could've made this a much larger work, but I think the length it was was ideal.

So many different characters you learn about through mythology, plays, and opera show up in this. The origin of Scylla and Charybdis. Odysseus and the turning the men to pigs. Jason and Medea. The Gods. The Titans. Prometheus. Daedalus and Icarus. Et al.

I have always enjoyed Greek mythology, and this book helped confirm that. I WAS TRANSFIXED reading this retelling. Circe, half nymph, is the daughter of Helios, Titan god of the sun. Basically the black sheep of the family, she is never treated the same as her siblings. After falling in love with a mortal fisherman named Glaucus, she yearned for him to be an immortal God. I loved this. Forget Homer. This version of Circe is much more satisfying and enjoyable.

I loved this book! I really like myths and knew the characters but these fleshed out versions of very minor myths were full and beautiful and complex. I don't think you need to have knowledge of the characters to appreciate and enjoy this book, in fact, the story stands on its own. ...more
