I have always enjoyed Greek mythology, and this book helped confirm that. I WAS TRANSFIXED reading this retelling. Circe, half nymph, is the daughter of Helios, Titan god of the sun. Basically the black sheep of the family, she is never treated the same as her siblings. After falling in love with a mortal fisherman named Glaucus, she yearned for him to be an immortal God. As someone who grew up with the old Greek stories, I have always known Circe only in passing—a witch in Homer’s Odyssey who turns Odysseus’s men into swine. She was a shadow on the edge of a greater hero’s journey. Madeline Miller, however, gives her back her voice and makes her the heart of her own epic.

It ended with a speculation and hope. We don’t find out if it worked. All that and we don’t know what happens. Maybe we are supposed to hope for her to change, but will it work?

I don’t understand why people cried at the end of this book.
