It’s not a secret, everyone knows The Queen of Hearts (and if you don’t, where have you been!?). What we don’t know is where she came from and how she became who she is. And this is Marissa Meyer’s gift to us in Heartless. Since we know what The Queen of Hearts is like… we know this is NOT going to be a pretty tale. But it’s oh so scrumptious! And it began with

The origin story for the Queen of Hearts, a most imaginative tale of wonder and vengeance, the impossible becoming possible most of the time, Wonderland characters who evolve and doom each other doing things the reader himself would not believe possible.

I am honestly not sure that I could hate this book any more than I do. The instalove when she meets the joker completely killed what sounded like an interesting and enjoyable book. This book alone made me realize that I don't think I can actually enjoy the Young Adult genre anymore. I think the author's are getting progressively more and more lazy. Give me a romance to believe in. Something that is worked for and hard fought to obtain. Give me Katniss and Peeta. She didn't fall in love with him ...more

Marissa Meyer certainly has a knack for fairy tale retellings. I loved her Lunar Chronicles series, and while Heartless doesn't quite measure up to most of those books, it's still an impressive performance. Meyer takes the basis of the Queen of Hearts in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland ("Off with his head!"), borrows a little from here and a little from there (including from Edgar Allan Poe) and comes up with a clever, and eventually tragic, love story that explains why the queen is so "heartle ...more
