First paragraph: Blood leaves no stain on a Warden’s grey cloak. I didn’t know that until the day I watched Morgan, second in command of the White Council’s Wardens, lift his sword over the kneeling form of a young man guilty of the practice of black magic. The boy, sixteen years old at the most, screamed and ranted in Korean underneath his black hood, his mouth spilling hatred and rage, convinced by his youth and power of his own immortality. He never knew it when the blade came down.

Not as good as some, but definitely strong and both dramatic and funny as usual. The book is fast paced and difficult to put down. The plot was much less save-the-world than usual but still fairly intense. I loved the horror convention setting and the "grown up" Molly. I thought this was the best book in the series so far. The story is really becoming tighter. Mr. Butcher is improving on and expanding his typical formula of big problem, weak Harry, big boom solution. Harry himself is changing and adapting to new expectations and I think it suits him. The side characters are also growing and turning this series into something pretty special. ...more

Harry's noir adventures as a wizard in modern-day Chicago just get better and better. Treat yourself and enjoy this series! Lots of adventure, thrills, angst, and consideration of good/evil, right/wrong, loyalty, all the biggies. Presents religion positively from a non-believer's view, which is unusual in modern fiction. ...more
