After 7 books, I keep hoping things will get easier for poor Harry Dresden, but they just don't. I liked the action, particularly with the zombie Sue at the end!! But there are consequences heaped on every choice Harry must make, and he never has easy choices in the first place. Can't the guy catch a break? I think I need to put this series on hold before it frustrates me so much that I don't want to read it any more. ...more

First paragraph:
On the whole, we're a murderous race. According to Genesis, it took as few as four people to make the planet too crowded to stand, and the first murder was a fratricide. Genesis says that in a fit of jealous rage, the very first child born to mortal parents, Cain, snapped and popped the first metaphorical cap in another human being. Necromancy! Dinosaurs! Polka?!

Dead Beat isn't my favorite of the Dresden Files, but it had a rousing conclusion and countless developments that will affect the rest of the series.

Harry battles a pack of power-hungry necromancers in this one, and where death magic is involved, what are we likely to see? That's right, folks. Zombies! Butcher's version are all about obeying the will of the wizard animating them, an aspect that is more terrifying to me than the thought of a mindless, brain-lusting

I loved Butters. And I loved Thomas. And I loved Harry riding Sue. Though after a while it got a bit silly just how many times Harry screwed up. First with the Erlking. Then with the book. Then at the vortex. Always allowing people to get the drop on him. It was really frustrating and I had to take a star off for that. Other than that, a really good book.

This book was a whirlwind! Harry has really become a tragic (but scary!) man, as his life continually punches him in the gut. I enjoyed him being able to fight back and maybe lay a few internal demons to rest in this book, while still setting up many plotlines that will resonate throughout the series.
