In the second book of this series, Harry Dresden is up against a hoard of rabid werewolves in various forms. I wanted to move on from the first of the series because I have had several people say that they do get better and better (although that's not to say I didn't enjoy number 1), but I think I was less impressed with this one. I just found it annoying how yet again, Murphy assumes Dresden is involved with the murders and yet again she is trying to arrest him, and yet again he is escaping out ...more

First paragraph: I never used to keep close track of the phases of the moon. So I didn’t know that it was one night shy of being full when a young woman sat down across from me in McAnally’s pub and asked me to tell her all about something that could get her killed.

Our smart-alec wizard-for-hire Harry Dresden is back, and this time he seems bigger, badder, and sexier than ever. Maybe it's because he blasted the loup-garou out of the local lock-up and down a few city blocks. Maybe it's because he

A nice enough book but not one I couldn't put down.

Harry is in trouble, gets beaten up a lot, keeps secrets, gets knocked out, gets in life-threatening situations, narrowly escapes said situations, has a conversation with his subconscious self and helps save (kind of) the day.

I really liked that he is not the imbalanced super hero that can do anything and be anything without repercussions or limits. He sure has his limits and he stretches them with unpleasant consequences to his health.

To be fair, I'd rate this one more of a 3.5.

Book two of The Dresden Files is action-packed from the get-go. It's filled with grizzly murders and feral beasts, and Harry gets the crap beat out of him time and again--maybe to the point of overkill.

I do appreciate that sometimes he just wants to curl up in a little ball and try again another day. Seems rather logical, since he's more "regular guy" than stoic, invincible hero.

I'm loving John Marcone. I have a thing for suave, gentleman gangsters

Plot: Gritty Detective novel meets urban fantasy. This book is an action explosion, Harry Dresden, wizard for hire, must out wit, out fight, and out live his opponents which include corrupt FBI agents, varies types of Werewolves while savings his friends even when they arrest him multiple times!

Writing Style: Less humor but more action then the previous book. Butcher excels at describing complex actions scenes while giving the reader insight into how each character is feeling during the scene.

I liked this one more than the first book actually. I really enjoyed the introduction of Billy and the Alphas and hope they stick around. I loved the different werewolf categories. That was an unique take on the werewolf mythology.

I would love to give it more stars but I can't. I just can't. I gave book #1 4 stars but this... I understand that Harry's a bit of a klutz - but there's being a klutz and then there's being an idiot and a hypocrite.

Every other chapter it's the same spiel, my fault, it's my fault, I did that etc. and so on. But does Harry learn his lesson? I'm sick and tired of him keeping stuff from others, stuff they need to know to be able to protect themselves. And I'm not saying he should spill his beans ab

I really enjoyed this book. I'd read the first Dresden Files book while in Ukraine a few years ago and for some reason it didn't appeal to me much. I'm really glad I tried the second one though, I'm going to follow it up with number 3 very soon.

2019 - My second read on this was via audiobook. Interestingly it has been 10 years since I last read it.
