This isn't a perfect book, despite all the hype. But even with the things that somewhat annoyed me (pretty unbelievable dialogue, lots of pithy quotes that sound profound but aren't necessarily, characters who come across as identical rather than just wooden, and a general tone of snarkiness), I allowed myself to be snookered. Hook. Line. Sinker.

Ok, I finally listened to my students and read this - in less than 24 hours - and they're right. It's good. Green's one-liners are classic, even if his teenagers are always unbelievably-precocious, and I love him for attempting to deal with very weighty topics in YA fiction that does not read like a soap opera as so much other YA fiction attempting to deal with these issues does. Overall I enjoyed this book, but it was with some reluctance. I was very bothered in the beginning by the way these kids talked...no teenagers in the world speak this way, no matter how intelligent they may be or how contemplative. But the story was very sweet and the characters were well-developed, so I got past that for the most part.
Wow. This book shook me up. I had been told the ending before I read it, but they told me incorrectly so I was expecting something that never occured. I can't wait to see the movie.
Update: The movie was amazing. Incredibly believable characters played by fantastic new actors (the actor playing Augustus was amazing and is new to this career and only 20 years old!). I sobbed like a baby at the end, and tears trickled down throughout the whole movie. The best part is it is still creeping into my th ...more
