What Members Thought

This was a really, really good book but I felt like my anticipation and the hype led to a sort of anticlimatic moment. I wish I hadn't read it because it was on so many "Best of 2014" lists, so I could have just appreciated the awesomeness without expecting so much.
With that said, this is basically everything I want in an End of the World book. There is a sense of the quiet expanse left behind when the electricity fails and 99% of the population dies, which I miss in apocalyptic books with lots ...more

An Emily St. John Mandel book is not to be rushed. It's to be savored. She writes beautifully. I seemed to have forgotten that science fiction is not my forte, but her story was such that I wanted to read this and taste this and see what happened to her characters. It took about the first 80-100 pages for things to pick up for me. I loved how everything is interwoven and the lives of Arthur, Jeevan, and Kirsten - and even Miranda - are connected. I did get confused as far as timelines going back

Loved this. Thought I may not like this but too many friends gave it good reviews to not read. Quoting a quote because I cannot do this book justice.
"Spectacular...exuberant....Station 11 offers comfort and hope to those who believe, or want to believe, that doomsday can be survived, that in spite of everything people will remain good at heart, and that when they start building a new world they will want what was best about the old". This is a very readable book. It goes quickly and is entertaining. I expected more time to be spent in the post-apocalyptic world, and was excited to read about the Shakespearean acting troupe traveling around. That was certainly part of the book, but it spends more time in flashback with the actor Arthur Leander (whose death on stage, just before the Georgian Flu outbreak that ends the world as we know it, starts the book) and the many other characters that in some way connect to him. The book

I liked this book, but it was a little confusing for me at first. Maybe because Im always reading a lot of books at once? I don't know, but it did take me a while to get into it. And at the end I did enjoy it.
Its a dystopian adult novel. Not very disturbing and even has a hint of hope at the end. Probably not a book for everyone, but if you're a dystopian junkie like me, might as well add it to the list! ...more

Gripping apocalyptic read but somewhat directionless and unsatisfying in the end. I liked how all the storylines were tied together and I liked that it made me think about what I might miss if civilization suddenly ended. And the futility and dumb luck of the survivors. But why are we following these particular people? Felt like LOST in some ways, only on a grander scale.
