83119 I know that a few of you expressed an interest in being volunteers at the library this summer. Well, we definitely have some work for a couple of volunteers!

We will actually need a little bit of help in May before the reading program begins with tasks like assembling reading booklets and cutting/folding flyers. Other volunteer opportunities will likely become available as we get closer to summer.

If you are interested in helping us out, please talk to either myself or Jenny at the Children's Desk. We'd love to have your assistance!

What did you think of this one, Sarah? I read this one some time ago and really enjoyed it.

83119 Your librarian has been reading nothing but sequels lately. I recently finished Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor and Shades of Earth by Beth Revis. Both books were great!

I'm also eager to get to The Friday Society, which is next on my stack at home. This book promises to feature strong female character in a steampunk society.

83119 I found a really great article written by Laurie Halse Anderson about her writing process as she penned this novel. It's an interesting read and might give you a little more insight into this book.

I'm especially interested in seeing her description of how Mattie's character changed as she wrote. Did you know that Mattie was originally envisioned as a 10-year-old orphan?

83119 Use this thread to discuss this month's Teen Book Club read, Fever 103 by Laurie Halse Anderson. What do you guys think?

83119 Within the past few weeks we've seen lots of exciting sequels make their way into the library. Most of these are highly anticipated, so be sure to place your holds ASAP!

Shades of Earth by Beth Revis
Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
Sever by Lauren DeSteffano
Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi
The Darkness Dwellers by Kirsten Miller
Breaking Point by Kristen Simmons
Everbound by Brodi Ashton
Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi
Prodigy by Marie Lu
83119 Great responses, guys! Feel free to continue commenting about each other's responses. Here's one follow-up question I have for you:

Those of you who have posted have indicated so far that Esperanza will likely play a huge rule in the upcoming sequel. Do you see her as a hero or a villain? Or do you think she will fall somewhere in between?

My personal thought: From what we saw of her in The House of the Scorpion she seems to be fairly well-intentioned, but I wonder how far she will go and what means she will use to acheive her goals.

83119 I'm also almost finished with The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde. If you have enjoyed books by authors like Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, you'll probably like this one too!

83119 What is everyone reading right now? Right now I'm working my way through The Diviners by Libba Bray. The book is a little slow going (the book is rather long!) but it's pretty interesting so far. Love the 1920's setting.
83119 As promised, we're going to continue our discussion of The House of the Scorpion here in this group. It is possible that there may be some spoilers, so please keep that in mind if you haven't finished the book yet.

Here are just a couple of questions to think about and discuss:

1) When Matt makes his escape from Opium he cries for Celia and Tam Lin, who he considered to be like his mother and father. But he also cries for El Patron. Why do you think he does this?

2) How does Tom mislead Maria? Why does Tom take Maria and Matt to see the screaming clones? How is this a turning point to Matt and Maria's relationship?

3) How do you think Esperanza (Maria's mother) will factor into the upcoming sequel to this book? What about Maria? Celia? What are your expectations for this sequel?

4) What did you think of the book's ending? Do you think that Tam Lin had a choice? Or was he really obligated to become part of El Patron's dragon horde?

5) There is a very clear purpose for Matt's life: To be the organ donor who keeps El Patron alive. Do you think that all humans have a specific purpose? What about animals?

New Shelves (3 new)
Jan 11, 2013 02:54PM

83119 Guess what? The library has two brand-new shelving units in the Young Adult area! We're using this shelving to expand the New Books area. Now books will be able to stay on the New Books shelves for a little bit longer and the display is just generally more attractive. Stop in and take a look!
83119 Here's some exciting news: Author Nancy Farmer is working on a sequel to The House of the Scorpion! No word yet on exactly when the sequel will be published, but this librarian is waiting with anticipation.

Here's the article discussing the sequel.

83119 I think that everyone has had a couple of days to check out the new catalog. Isn't it great? If you ever have questions about the catalog or how to manage your account, feel free to ask.
83119 The House of the Scorpion is here! Come to the Children's Desk to pick up your copy of January's Book Club read whenever you get a chance. Don't forget that you have lots of time to read this one since we will not be meeting until January 23.

Please also feel free to use this thread to discuss the book by posting your questions, comments, and thoughts on The House of the Scorpion.
Nov 19, 2012 09:20AM

83119 This week the library will go completely offline as we get ready to "go live" with our new computer system! There will not be any sort of catalog, so the only way to find a book will be to physically go and check the shelves. If you check out items, they won't appear on your account until after we go live. We are still unable to place holds. Please be patient with us during this time!

83119 Are you in need of something new to read, but don't know what book to try next? Comment in this thread and we can help! I (your friendly teen librarian) can always give suggestions, but anyone can feel free to comment with recommendations.

Are you craving fantasy? Romance? Action? In your comment, just let us know what you're in the mood for. Listing a few books that you've read recently will help if you're looking for something with a similar feel/genre.

83119 Right now your teen librarian is reading Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. This book got starred reviews in all of the book review journals, so I'm pretty excited. It's fantasy with a little Russian flare. So far it's pretty good!
