Steampunk (7 new)
Jul 07, 2014 08:17AM

83119 Leviathan is a book that falls into the Steampunk genre. Steampunk is a type of science fiction and alternative history that is usually set in Victorian times (often in England). Technology more advanced than what you would have seen in Victorian times is often featured in the story, but all of this technology is run on steam power. The machinery is fairly clunky, and gears are often featured in the style.

Have you ever read any books other than this one from the steampunk genre? If you have, tell us about them.

Whether you have read other steampunk books or not, tell us what you think of this genre. Do you like the style? What do you like or not like about it?

83119 This is Blair posting-

Even before I began the book, I was intrigued by the different ways certain advances were made in this steampunk-esque alternate history. Both Deryn and Alek have compelling storylines, and I'm anxious to find out what happens next.

83119 Hey everyone! Just a few things that everyone should know about this book club before we get started.

First, if you still need a copy of the book so that you can start reading, be sure to visit the library ASAP and talk to a Children's Librarian. As of this moment (June 23) all paper copies of the book have already been check out by eager teen readers. If you still need a copy of the book, we will have to place you on the hold list so that you will get a copy of the book when one is returned by another reader. Those of you who have already finished the book: Please return it to the library ASAP so that someone else can get started on the book. Thanks!

The good news: Copies of the audiobook remain! Pick up a copy of the book on CD at the Children's Desk soon before those run out too. I have listened to this book on CD before, and it's actually a lot of fun to listen to. The narrator is fantastic and makes the story come alive.

For the first few weeks, we are going to try to limit discussion of the book to topics that will be introduced during the first 20 chapters of the book. During this time, please try to keep your posts spoiler-free so that the ending isn't given away to someone who hasn't finished reading the book yet. Starting on July 7, however, all bets are off and we will begin discussing the ending of the book. If you haven't finished the book by this time that's absolutely fine. Take your time and finish whenever you are able. Just be warned that there may be some talk about the book's ending here.

Do you have other questions about the book club? Post your questions here, or visit the library and talk to one of the Children's Librarians.

83119 Fantastic suggestions, Ashley! Lots of great steampunk reads, and from a wide range of sub-genres too. Love it!

Everyone, keep the books coming. Don't forget that reading something from the sci-fi and steampunk genres are two of the challenges listed in your Extra Challenge booklet, so watch this space for more ideas.

83119 This week's Teen Event is the Egg Drop! Build a contraption that will (hopefully) protect a egg from a dangerous fall. We'll be dropping our eggs in the library from the main floor down to the lower level. How many eggs do you think will go SPLAT? Will yours survive the fall?

As always, please sign up in advance for this program by visiting, calling (262-691-5670, ex. 32), or e-mailing the library.

83119 This year our theme for the Summer Reading Program is "Spark a Reaction." This theme is all about the science, science fiction, and steampunk genres.

Let's get a discussion started about this theme. What books have you read that you would recommend to other teens that fall into these categories? Tell us the title, the author, and a little bit about what makes the book a good read.

83119 Great choices, everyone! Keep the posts coming. It's always so interesting to see what everyone else is reading. We can find out about a lot of great new books that way. :)

I (Sandy) currently have The Geography of You and Me by Jennifer E. Smith on my stack at home. I've read and enjoyed this author's other books, and I'm looking forward to another light summer romance.

83119 For the month of March, Teen Book Club will be having a Graphic Novel Extravaganza! We will be reading three graphic novels this month: Boxers and Saints by Gene Luen Yang, and Will Whit by Laura Lee Gulledge.

Since graphic novels are usually fairly quick reads anyone who wants to participate should have plenty of time to read all three books before we meet on March 26. If you find, however, that you're simply unable to read all three books then don't worry - just pick and choose the ones that you want to read. No worries.

Stop in at the library and pick up copies of the books as soon as possible from the Children's Desk!

83119 If you're in this group and seeing this message then you probably already know that YA books are awesome. Be sure that your friends and family - especially the adults in your lives - know that the books that are out there for you to read are amazing! This article does a really awesome job of talking about how a book should not be discounted just because it's marketed for teens:
