83119 I don't know about you, but I had a great time at today's Dig In, Read In event! Big thanks to everyone who attended. As promised, here is the recipe for the dirt cake that we ate:

DIRT CAKE

2 (20 oz.) pkgs. Oreo cookies
1/2 stick butter
1 (8 oz.) cream cheese
1 c. powdered sugar
3 1/2 c. milk
2 sm. French vanilla instant pudding boxes
1 (12 oz.) Cool Whip

Cream the butter, cream cheese and powdered sugar together in a bowl, and then set aside.

In another LARGE bowl, mix pudding together with the milk, add the Cool Whip to pudding mixture. (Don’t follow the directions on the pudding, just use the 3 1/2 cups of milk). Then blend in with the cream cheese mixture.

To crush the Oreos, put the packages of Oreos in a large Ziploc bag. Then, in case of a tear in the bag, just put your Ziploc bag inside another large Ziploc bag for protection, then crush.

Then, in a large bowl, layer the cream and the Oreos. Don’t be afraid to go heavy on the cream or else you will have a lot left over. Likewise, use just a thin layer of the Oreos. Start with the Oreos on the bottom of the bowl, then end with Oreos to top it off.

Chill for at least an hour before serving. Top with gummy worms or other goodies, if desired.

83119 My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece looked really interesting to me, Hannah. Let us know how you like it when you're finished!

This librarian just finished two fun books that you guys might enjoy:

The first was Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt. After catching her boyfriend cheating on her online, the main character decides that her life would be a lot better if she lived more simply, the way that did in the 1960s when her grandmother was young. The main character is a little self-absorbed, but let's face it - we are all a little self-absorbed.

I also read Monument 14 by Emmy Laybourne. This is gritty survival story. After a series of natural disasters and a chemical spill, 14 kids are forced to take shelter together in an abandoned superstore. This book is an intense page-turner!

83119 Over on Twitter, fans of YA novels are having fun with the titles of popular books for teens. It's amazing what sort of difference one letter makes!

83119 Welcome to the group, Kiara! Can you tell us a little bit about Frost Burned? Is it a fantasy read? I'm not familiar with this book, but I always love learning about new things to read.

83119 Olivia, we can definitely recommend some mysteries for you! There are lots of different kinds of mysteries. I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have to Kill You by Ally Carter is set at a school for spies and has lots of adventure and intrigue. If you like historical mysteries, you might try The Girl Is Murder by Kathryn Miller Haines or Ripper by Stefan Petrucha. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin is shelved in the Children's area, but it's a classic "whodunnit" mystery that I think has some teen appeal. If you prefer supernatural mystery, you might want to try Dead Is the New Black by Marlene Perez. If you want something more contemporary and everyday, try Getting the Girl A Guide to Private Investigation Surveillance and Cookery.

83119 Don't forget that if you need reading suggestions, we have lots of great suggested reading lists here at the library that will get you started. These lists cover lots of different genres, and can be found over by the windows in the YA area.

Also, feel free to use this space to ask the group for reading suggestions! Everyone here has read lots of great titles, and this discussion thread can be a great place to brainstorm great book suggestions.

83119 Leah, we have lots of great historical fiction to try! If you haven't read it yet, you should check out Code Name Verity, which is about two girls who become friends during WWII - one is a spy, and the other a pilot. At the beginning of the story the spy gets captured by the Nazis and is held prisoner. It's an intense story, and it's probably one of the best books I've ever read.

A few other titles to consider:
Out of the Easy by Ruta Septys
A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly
Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

There's lots more where that came from! If you need more suggestions, come visit the library and talk to me at the Children's Desk.

83119 As promised, here is the link to the geode-making experiment that we did at the library this week:

http://www.stevespangler.com/experime...

The experiment should be easy to replicate at home for those who are interested in doing it again. Everyone also had some really good ideas for ways to alter the experiment to get different results. If you try any of these ideas at home (growing crystals in a bowl, mixing different colors of food coloring, etc) let me know how it goes!
