Cast your vote on three polls that we have posted in the YA area of the library. Then tell us a bit about why you voted the way you did to be entered into a raffle for the chance to win a $20 Half Price Books gift card.

83119 Now that school is started, it's time to start thinking about Fall programs at the library. Teen Advisory Group and Teen Book Club will both be meeting on Wednesday, September 24 from 3:00-4:30 pm. At TAG we will be getting ready for some upcoming events, so come with lots of ideas!

This month Teen Book Club will be reading The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson. This book promises to be a quick but compelling read. Pick up a copy of the book ASAP at the Children's Desk.

83119 Need another way to find great YA books? There's an app for that, available on Android and iOS. YALSA's Teen Book Finder lets you search for books by title, author, genre, and date of publication. There are also great book lists and lists of award winners to browse. My favorite feature is the Hot Picks that are featured on the home page - Three new books are listed here every day, and you never know what you'll stumble upon!

83119 The 2014 Teen Summer Reading Program has officially ended! Thanks to everyone who participated. This year's program was better than ever. It was great chatting with so many of you about the books that you have been reading, and I loved seeing so many of your faces at our Teen Events. Tank you!

Winners for the Teen Reading Raffle were selected yesterday, and winners have all been notified. If you received a call from us saying that you won a prize, please come to the Children's Desk when you can and pick it up.

83119 Since the Summer Reading Program is drawing to a close, we have two great programs taking place this week. On Thursday, July 31 the Science Alliance will be here with some hands-on activities to try. They're also bringing a hoverboard. I don't know about you, but I'm super excited to see the hoverboard in action!

The grand finale for the summer will take place on Friday, August 1 at 4:30 pm: Angry Birds LIVE! Have you played Angry Birds before? We're going to create a life-size version of the game by constructing structures out of cardboard boxes. Then we'll fling balls at the structures and try to knock them over. Pizza and Kona Ice will also be served, so come hungry!

Registration for both of these programs is required! Visit or call the Children's Desk to sign up.

83119 This week is the last week of the 2014 Summer Reading Program! Be sure to visit the library on or before Saturday, August 2 to collect all of your prizes! Winners for the Teen Reading Raffle will be selected on August 4.

83119 Allison: I've heard great things about that book! Did you know that it's being turned into a movie? The movie will actually be in theaters on August 22.
Predictions (2 new)
Jul 29, 2014 03:37PM

83119 Blair here. I'm reluctant to write too much in this section since I have now finished the trilogy, haha. I will say that keeping secrets continues to be an important theme in Behemoth and Goliath.
Predictions (2 new)
Jul 29, 2014 02:36PM

83119 This book is the first in a trilogy. What do you predict will happen in the next volumes? What challenges will Deryn and Alek face? How will their actions continue to affect the outcome of the war? What about Deryn's disguise - do you think that she can keep hiding the fact that she is a girl? Will Alek be able to keep his noble heritage a secret from the crew? How will all of this secret-keeping affect things?
Gender Roles (1 new)
Jul 29, 2014 02:26PM

83119 Deryn is forced to disguise herself as a boy in order to enlist in the British Air Service. The reality is that until recently women were not able to serve actively in the military as soldiers. What do you make of this? Why do you think that society at this time prevented women from serving in this way? Is there something inherently different about girls and boys that encourages this different sort of treatment? Is this a treatment fair? How long do you think that Deryn can keep up the pretense of being a boy?
Steampunk (7 new)
Jul 29, 2014 02:17PM

83119 Lauren, I'm glad that you're enjoying the steampunk genre so far! What exactly is it about steampunk that is appealing to you? What did your friend tell you about it that made it sound like something you might want to try?
Jul 23, 2014 12:24PM

83119 Alright, everyone, your librarian is looking for book suggestions. I'm trying to make a list of books for teens that don't have a lot of romance in them. Coming up with books with no romance is a lot harder to do than it sounds! If any of you can think of any great books like this, please post them here. Thanks!
Jul 23, 2014 12:22PM

83119 Everyone's been reading lots of great books this summer! This librarian is currently working her way through Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I was a big fan of the author's other book Eleanor and Park, so I'm excited to read another one of her books. If you haven't checked out Rainbow Rowell's books yet, I highly recommend it!
Jul 21, 2014 04:15PM

83119 This week's Teen Event is a movie! Thanks to everyone who suggested movies that we could show. Popular demand has insisted that we show the movie based on the book Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins.

This is a very long movie. If we want to finish the movie before the library closes, then we will need to start a bit earlier than usual! You are welcome to arrive at 6:30 if you can't get here earlier, but the movie will begin at 6:00!
Taking Sides (1 new)
Jul 16, 2014 08:53AM

83119 The two main characters in this book, Deryn and Alek, each come from two different countries who are at war. Yet as the story progresses they find themselves working together. Why do you think they decided to work together? Do you think that this was a good idea, or should they have focused more on helping their respective countries win the war? What problems might arise in the future because of their collaboration? Or do you think there will be benefits to Deryn and Alek working together?
Jul 16, 2014 08:38AM

83119 There are two major sides to the conflict featured in this story, the Darwinists and the Clankers. The Darwinists are more interested in using the natural world and specially bred creatures to help them fight the war, while the Clankers build fantastic war machines using gears and metal. Which of these two sides/styles are you more drawn to? What is so appealing about each side?
Steampunk (7 new)
Jul 14, 2014 05:18PM

83119 Thanks for the recommendations, Ashley!

I really enjoy seeing the creative ways that different authors re-imagine the world.

The Author (Scott Westerfeld) has described steampunk as "blending future and past." What about the nature of the genre do you think has made it more popular in recent years? Why do you think more people gravitate towards it?

83119 Also: Did anyone out there listen to the audiobook rather than reading a paper copy? Knowing that the physical book is illustrated, did you feel like you were missing anything by not being able to see these illustrations? How do you think that listing to the book enhanced your experience? Do you think that hearing it read aloud made it easier to picture the descriptions? Why/why not?

Further general comments on the illustrations are still welcome as well.
