58421 A huge thank you to my very secret santa for my book, A Science Fiction Omnibus by Brian W. Aldiss . I'd never heard of this one but I'm very intrigued to get to it next year & sci-fi is one of my favourite genres!

Dec 17, 2024 04:43AM

58421 january wrap-up
outcome: 16 books, 4,999 pages, & 13h 37m

1. Falling (357) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
i had a lot of fun with this one, i didn't try to guess what would happen and it was just an entertaining read that kept me turning the page. i plan on picking up the next book pretty soon.

2. Gone Girl (475) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
i loved this one. the authors writing and the way they were able to write such a compelling character, one who you root for even if they're utterly bat shit crazy and you know that, yet you still feel vindicated alongside them. amy is the epitome of gatekeep, gaslight, girlboss and you know what? i'm glad she got away with it.

3. The Darkest Minds (567) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
a repeat offender, such a comfort read. it's one of those 2010s dystopians that i think has held up really well over the years, and liam is such a swoon worthy love interest - the ending is always gut wrenching to read.

4. Conversations with Friends (audiobook) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
god i loved this one, my favourite sally rooney by a long shot and could easily be one of my best reads of the year (and we're only a week in!). shocked how much i related to frances, how much i was invested in all of the characters, and in awe of how well written sally rooney is in this one - stunning.

5. Foster (audiobook) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
i went into this one completely blind, and at a little under an hour listening time god did it pack a powerful punch. my first claire keegan book, her writing was nothing short of beautiful. deceptively simplistic, the way the author was able to package the complexity of the human experience into the narrative of a young girl was nothing short of poignant.

6. Never Fade (507) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
so good, so very sad. no clue where the third book takes us, but very excited to get to it. poor jude, was hoping my recollection of this book was wrong.

7. Exit Strategy (audiobook) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
this was probably my second favourite in the series so far, i loved getting to reunite with past characters. murderbot saves the day once again.

8. Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory (19) ⭐️⭐️⭐️
honestly, this did nothing for me. sitting at 19 pages, it offered one scene with our crew following the events of exit strategy. a nice little glimpse into the dynamic from a pov that's not murderbot, but overall didn't contribute to the story in general.

9. In the Afterlight (535) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
an incredible conclusion to the trilogy, so devastating but a very hopeful ending. so glad i reread this series, such a goodie.

10. Carter Reed (351) ⭐️⭐️⭐️
a re-read that honestly wasn't as good as i remembered. didn't release just how annoying the main character was.

11. Kisscut (434) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
this was just incredible, dark but so well written and done. i was utterly shocked as the story unfolded, and didn't expect some of the turns that occurred. another karin slaughter, another incredible read.

12. Project Hail Mary (478) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
i actually loved this book, and was pleasantly surprised that the author was able to pull off writing an alien into their novel that didn't feel weird/not realistic. didn't expect the ending at all but glad he didn't kill rocky (although there was a close call). I also enjoyed the flashback scenes much more than i expected, and am so glad i picked this one up. now to wait another year for the film...

13. Driving My Obsession (312) ⭐️.5
this was subpar at best, the mmc was misogynistic and his reasons for hating the fmc were so weak and idiotic the whole book made little to no sense. ugh.

14. Fallen Crest Family (305) ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
re-read, don't think the series has aged well and def didn't enjoy it as much as i did last time.

15. Vampire Academy (332) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
incredible book series, nostalgic re-read.

16. Frostbite (327) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
god this books ending is always devastating, and the author sure doesn't let up in the rest of the series.
